Should I go with, or without the highlights across?

First one as it breaks it up better.

anyone think the highlights are distracting? Maybe some more transparency in the highlights?

Without them the information is just floating in a soup, but you add structure and make it better in my opinion.

how about reducing the highlights to 3 for some better rhythm ? GEt rid of the top highlight?

It's yours to do as you wish. I think you need to be more specific then just "Graphic Designer"

at first glance, I like the one without the gray bars going across it.

yeah, me too. But the bars do help separate the information....must be a way to have the best of both worlds

I like the grey bars, I think it helps to break up the info. What I don't like is the red slashes - they serve no purpose other than to draw my eye to them. Also, leave out the "portfolio and references upon request". Any design job you are applying for will expect to see your portfolio and references would be provided when you fill out an application. What's the purpose of the 1/1 in the corner? If it serves none, get rid of it. I know you didn't ask for a critique, I couldn't help myself, but other than those things, I think you did a nice job of it

I like the first one better, maybe try them at a slightly lighter transparency.

The bars certainly help bring out points of interest in the resume. Without them there isn't much of a separation from one section to the other.

The design of this resume relates to the design of my name. Red slashes were used for a little unification with the red "o"
Aside from providing information about my references and portfolio, the 'Portfolio' portion on the bottom right was added to help balance things out, but I can leave that side short as well.
The 1/1 located on the bottom right was to help ground and provide some balance, especially with my name being so heavy on the top left....its like a little hook keeping the thing from tipping over to the left because of my name. Oh, and it meanss page one of one...
The red slashes can become black slashes, but I really want to incorporate some red since I have it in my logo.
Any of this make sense?

Maybe you could make them relate to the rest of the design better by turning them into red colons : to emphasize the dots in the umlaut.
