i just read this story on CNN, it really makes me wish you needed a license to become a parent. I think naming a child any of those things constitutes abuse. I really feel for those kids.
Broacher
07-24-2008, 02:20 PM
I think you can trace this back to the 'our-child-is-a-unique-individual-as-shown-by-the-spelling-of-their-name' trend. Maybe this is just the natural evolution of that trend, albeit an extreme one perpetrated by what also seems to be the low end of the IQ pool.
A real unusual child name today might be: Peter, Mary, Jim, Dave, Karen, Jane, George....

I feel so bad for the kids, because if the parents can actually name them like this, it makes me wonder what kind of respect the parents will show the kids overall throughout their lives.
Seriously... how much respect for the children can you have if you call your twins Benson and Hedges, or Fish and Chips?!

This made me laugh, only because I'm assuming it's a joke:
My unusual name hasn't affected me at all; in fact, it has helped me make friends and improve my confidence, especially since leaving school.

My parents said they joked about naming me Elvis Nevada Tuna if I would have been a boy. I like knowing they had fun being creative and toying with the idea, but also knowing that they had decided they would have actually named me Brandon.

When he gets into school and everyone sees that his name is spelt KY they're gonna have a field day! I've already thought up a bunch of jokes for when he's older *LOL* But to actually have a name like Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii...they must have really hated their child.

All this reminds me of something I thought of when I was considering names for my son. It was a skit on SNL where this couple were debating names for thier baby to be, and the husband kept pointing out ways that kids would tease their kid, like naming him Peter? no Dick? no...
Then a knock at the door
"telegram for Mr. Asswipe Johnson"
uggh....It's pronounced azWEEpay
In all honesty, I did give my son a very unusual middle name, but he loves it, is very proud that Mom was so creative and I think it'll make a great rock star name - LOL. His name is Liam Free.

I like unusual names. My father has an extremely common first and last name. When he was first moved to the town where he planned on raising a family, there was another person with the same name writing bad checks, which made things rather difficult for him. So he decided to give all of his children unusual names, which he did. The only one of us six who ever had problems with teasing was the youngest, because he decided to shorten his name to B.J.

I gave my kids semi-unusual names, not too crazy though, their middle names are family related and are the "normal" names just in case they'd rather use those when they get older, I don't think they will though.
Their names are-
Phoenix Olivia
Larkyn Hilary
Gryphon Davis (Gryphon is the traditional spelling, not a new made up version)
Gavin Paul

We tried surfing the in-between common and unusual for our kids
Emmett Chance
(we loved the first name as it wasn't strange but fairly uncommon, middle name pulled from "Being "There")
For our daughter we went slightly more unusual:
Lark Io
(we are amazed at how many people have never heard the word "lark" before. She'd have been named Aesop if she were a boy)
Names we told people we were using before babies were born:
Dracula
Bobert or Boberta
Amorosa
Umbrella & Parisol (in case of twin girls)

You guys are thinking of this article I posted about a year ago in this thread (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28422) :)
A couple in Sweden, once fined for refusing to give their son a first name, has now been told that the name they chose for the five-year-old boy is invalid, The unnamed couple is appealing a court order rejecting the boy's name, Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, which they say is "a pregnant, expressionistic development that we see as an artistic creation" and pronounced Albin.

Great names, Seamus! But then I suppose most people probably don't know how to pronounce your first name when they see it or if they hear it first, can't spell it! I almost named my son Seamus (I love strong Irish/Scottish/British names) As far as Lark goes, that surprises me, its a bird and really I mean how many people haven't heard of "Larks tongues in Aspic". ;)

Spell it? :p
I actually spell it Séamas, but leave off the acute on my user name just to avoid problems.
Séamas is just my nickname, my given name is James, called Jimmy by family, called Jim at work, called Séamas by my buddies.
We avoided names that reflected our ethnicity (I'm Irish -mostly , wife is Jewish) so we looked more French and Greek names than anything else, but also plain words that reflected something we liked.

Oooh, very cool album I only first listened to that (and purchased it) a couple years ago.
Yeah, there are people who never heard of a Lark -even a sister of mine only heard the term "happy as a lark" or "going out for a lark", but never connected it to the various birds.
I wanted something to do with nature, so Sparrow, Sequoia (native word for Sparrow), and varoius words for fauna and flora.
We used joking pronounciation for Lark asd my son called her Lork for the first few months and an Irish friend pronounces it "Lairk".

After we settled on Jaina, we found out that Princess Leia and Han Solo in the later Star Wars books have a daughter named Jaina. We didn't name her after that specifically, but once we found out there was that reference it, I thought it was really cool. She loves it, too, as I've already turned her into a Star Wars fan! Here is another story on this subject ;)
http://thepeoplesnews.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/black-mother-first-person-arrested-for-naming-her-child/
A black woman arrested for naming her child in Klingon.
Alopecia Davies, 18, was arrested this morning after she refused an order from the African American Name Beautification Committee to spell her daughter’s name with letters found in the standard English alphabet.
Well being her name is Alopecia I can understand she thinks odd names are ok.
Aww look at my sweet little baby ... I'll name her after a medical condition mmmmm sweet

Uh, yeah, is she bald? Anyway, doesn't surprise me, I met a woman in the hospital (when I had my son-in NC) who had named her baby Meconium because she heard the word in the delivery room and thought it was pretty. (Look it up, its NOT pretty).

^^^^omg thats gnarly!
this made me laugh
There aren’t any baby girls in her neighborhood that have fewer than four syllables in their name, so that would’ve made her daughter stand out.

Yeah but sounding like you are choking and gagging out her name wouldn't make her stand out at all lmao :D

I wonder if there's any truth to the story my HS English teacher told the class about a mother who named her baby girl Syphilis and pronounced it as "Suh - Phyllis."

Ugh!! Did no one tell her what it meant until it was named?

*GAG* Gross!!! The wiki made me sick!
I really hope that kid doesn't get a nickname like S**tstain in High School....but somehow, I don't think the kid is that lucky.

I don't think it would've mattered. The woman was a complete moron.

I had some friends when I was little whose parents named them Tom, Dick , and Harry...in that order. But that's the worst one I know of personally.
