Let me start by saying that I'm well aware I've misused the semicolon in my title. It wasn't a mistake, it was habit. See, the forum I've recently been spending alot of time on is going through a "trend" as you might say. Anyway, just thought I'd clear that up, for all those grammar perfectionists... of that's even a word? :D

So, now that that's out of the way, I might as well introduce myself.
My name is Devon. But hey, usernames are there for a reason, so you can all just call me freak. I'm not sure what exactly the age group here is, but I'd say I'm pretty young; I'm fifteen years old. Ever since I was very little (I'm talking six or seven here), I've always had a passion for two things; music and graphics. I'll admit, I've never really had the right resources I needed. It's not necessarily that I couldn't afford them, it was just the fact that I'd never even considered making a career out of music and graphics (though I'm sure I couldn't have afforded the resources, either.)

Anyway, I've finally decided what I want to do with my life. I want to finish highschool, go to a good University, major in record engineering/producing and minor in graphic design or somthing in the same category. Why just minor in graphic design? Well, as much as I love graphics, my main goal is to open a recording studio somewhere. I know, it's going to take a long time, but I'm willing to work at it. I'm doing all I can at the moment; I've taken music my first two years in a row, I have a decent paying, part time summer job (40 hours a week is part time, correct?), and I use most of the money I earn to buy my "tools".

I want to minor in graphic design just in case te recording studio doesn't work out. It's like taking my second biggest passion and using it as a fall-back plan. Still, I'd like to become a decent graphic artist.

Now, for the bitter reality. Most of my "career" in graphic design has been making things called "signatures" for other members on different forums. I'm not sure if we have them here or not; I didn't see the option to edit them in the User Control Panel.

Anyway, that being said, I really have no clue what I'm doing. Sure, I can make some pretty interesting things, but I want to learn about depth, lighting, color (really want to learn about color, for some reason), and all the fancy talk. That's where this forum comes into play. It was the first result I got when I searched "Graphic Design Forum" on google. I was hoping, but sticking around, I'd be able to pick up some tips and tricks from you guys, and maybe even become a better graphic designer, though I doubt that will happen...

Pfft, who am I kidding. I have every intention of becoming a better graphic designer. Not trying to sound full of myself or anything, though. I'm just saying that I'm willing to work on it.

Anyway, I'm done. I'm off to search the forum for some interesting things read about. Thanks for viewing my intro thread!

... Oh wow, that whole thing sounded really cliche, didn't it? :/

P.S.
If anyone has any tips they'd like to pass on (a.k.a. tutoring), please PM me. I can't really offer anything in return (besides eternal gratefulness), so if you're looking for money than forget it. I can, however, offer to try my best. I know that sounds cliche, too, by the way. xD

First off; welcome 'freak'! (note my use of the semicolon...I'm following your trend)

Second; you've found the best place to find great help, tips, advice, etc. Many very talented people here (I'm not one of them) from all age groups. I myself am 38 and have been in tech illustration/graphic design since around 1990. I've not got all the answers, but I use Adobe Illustrator frequently so I may be able to offer you a bit of assistance there.

While you're into music and graphics...all my life I've been into 'cars' therefore I have a side biz where I design auto-related graphics. I guess it's my fall-back plan when I want to make a little extra money and have a great time while doing it.

It sounds like you are very passionate about your chosen career paths. Keep ahold of that passion...it's what fuels you...it'll get you where you want to be. Think positive, never give up and stay 'driven' and you'll get there. Because at age 15...you've got quite a long and winding road ahead of you.

Best of luck to you and be sure to click around on here; you'll find lots of info and hopefully some inspiring work to keep you motivated!

Enjoy!

Hi freak, welcome to the forum. http://koolsplace.com/images/koolsmiley.gif

You'll have sig options after you get a few more posts. Not many in here use the traditional forum sigs though. Is record producing a college major now days? That would be pretty cool.

Welcome!

Kool, the University here has a degree for music production titled "Music Media." A friend of mine is about to graduate in it - it's basically a sound/recording engineer. He's learned protools and all that.

Hi Devon,

Before you plunge head first into this, at your age, I would suggest you do some work experience in both your chosen career paths. It might not be as glamourous as it seems from a 15 year old's point of view. There is a lot of thankless hard work involved in both industries. If you have passion though, it will see you through.

Welcome Freak! :D
It's cool to hear you are interested in both music and art!
I've been a music and art guy for a big portion of my life. When i was graduating from high school i had to make a crucial decision... Producing Music or Graphic Arts. I spent a lot of time researching different schools for both, i choose graphic arts for many different personal reasons, but i am still heavily involved in music production.

One thing i can tell you about the music industry is that the sooner you start the better, because it's a very very tough field to succeed in.
If you're really interested in the music industry, I would highly recommend going to a local music studio and apply for a non-paying internship that you can go to somedays after school. It's typical for a music career to start out with about 5 years of a non-paying internship (graduate or not), so the sooner you get that under your belt, the quicker you will be able to land a paying job. Also, Studios are always looking for help and there is no better way to soak up free knowledge from a professional.

Again, it's awesome your so interested in your future careers at that age! The graphicdesigforum is a great place to learn about graphic design, stick around and you may just be the top of your class. :D

Cool, I don't think there was anything like that back when I went to college of course that was in the dark ages compared to today LOL.

That's considered full time in the U.S.

Oh puh-leeze, Tony. Don't listen to him freak, he's one of the best.
