I created a fake S&L called Praetorian where I created a helmet logo based on pictures of the helmets the Praetorian Guard used to wear during the Roman Empire.
I used a green and black color scheme for it, green representing finance and black representing strength.
This is a new version of that logo with new text, retaining the helmet logo.
I'm ready for my lashing... :)
Technical issues - None, it follows all the rules of a proper logo. Good job. :)
Personal opinions - I don't like the tight kerning. I think it creates unnecessary tension when trying to read it. I like the helmet, 3 simple shapes.

While Trajan allows you to cap the first letter of the word, it never looks right.
Kerning is all over the place. It's also not a font to allow autokerning.
You don't have a lot of weight difference between Praetorian and the savings & loan. It sort of all runs together.
While you have a fairly plausible representation of a roman helmet, it is off balance. Try messing with the cheek plate to give it more grounding.
Explain your reasoning for having the logo bug after the name. It's not wrong but what is the reason in this instance?

I could put the helmet in front of the name. Could tilt it forward and boost the cheek plate like Driver said.
The font needs to be a good bold sans-serif (I hate Impact...puke).
I'm looking for what's wrong. ;)

I see the kerning problems but how about the leading? Why do you need that bold line at all? Is it to add some colour? I find it distracting and unnecessary.

Work on your proportions man!
It seems to me that the font size of the headline and of the subhead are just to close.
:-)
I think removing the green line and adding some contrast in weight within the headline and subhead could really start to bring it together.
Just my thoughts.
get rid of the green line.

The Praetorian and the savings & loan hurt my eyes. I personally like that font, however as others suggested, maybe you should try it without that green line...or perhaps put some between the savings and loans and Praetorian. All the best :)

too much going on, the text and icon is over powering eachother.

I agree with Kool, while technically it's a good logo...
My half cent...
That Trojan helmet....I have seen that icon so much it's disgusting, it looks like clip art right out of the sports industry. I am not trying to be harsh here, but talk about an overused icon. I would experiment with introducing that in a more clever way, or change all together, rather than flopping some over used sports clip art on there. It's just not original.

Nice, simple and clean. Good job.

Isn't there another thing than that helmet to represent Praetorian?
I walked around last weekend and found a lot of workshop use the logo. If the loan firm is here, people will know their logo more as Italian made wannabe ceramic than saving and loan company.
I took a shot on it and may post here later. :)

I didn't go to school to be a graphic designer nor am I a logo designer now so I might be ignorant if this is common knowledge: What are the rules of a proper logo?

The basic rules are clients must approve the logo, secondly it must not logo already used although they run for different industry. :)
Vector and limited color palette. The latter is more a guideline than a rule. The design should also function well in black and white (not grayscale). It should also be scalable without much loss in readability in terms of typography and iconography. If your design conforms to those things than you have good start technically speaking. Aesthetics are another issue.

I completely agree with the kerning, small cap issue using Trajan. It's a beautiful typeface and creates lovely negative space, you need to let it show.

Yeah I kind of figured that much. I was just curious.
How about wacky gradients? Is that part of the rules?
