I'm participating in a contest to design the new logo for Convert.net. Here is the brief description of the requester: "Looking for a simple, yet powerful, text-based/grayscale logo for our online conversion website: Convert.net"
Here are my first designs, how do they seem?

I'm not sold on the nv ligature you've created. Explain to me why you want it in there? Is it supposed to be illustrative?
It isn't necessary for the nv ligature to remain. I too had an impression that the v can't be properly distinguished. That's why I made some versions with the v clearly visible:

The nv ligature is good idea, but the execution needs work. I feel that is the only concept at this point that is worth exploring further. This is because its the only one that conveys the idea of conversion. All the other graphic elements such as the circle and arrows seem more like decoration. Furthermore, they don't really convey conversion, but twisting or turning.

Those 2 are better IMO.

First off...
I'm participating in a contest to design the new logo for Convert.net.... I HOPE that this is not a sec art "contest"!
Secondly, I am not really feeling any of them. :o

The second two are better, but the arrows in a circle trying to represent convert it so overplayed and frankly it doesn't even represent convert very well. Maybe you actually try to "convert" something in the logo, mirroring, possibly shade change, warping to another text, something that isn't so ridiculously over used in logos.
As is it's not bad, but if you want it to stand out you have to do something more than anyone with a mediocre knowledge of symbols could come up with.
That's not true. Normally these people pick the ones that are the least successful…

I like the last one of the second two but maybe work on the arrow a little bit more.

i'm not really sold on any of them. i think you should 1st loose the web 2.0 effects at least until the concept is complete. work towards converting something as suggested above but most importantly
don't do spec work (http://www.no-spec.com/)
the latter logos are better. But where is the convertion. more like revolution. The arrows confuse the peice and mean nothing. maybe lose the arrows and go into colour experimentation. converting from one colour to another, that could be more a more simple approach. Good type face and nice gradient.
look at a company called YEDL or NEDL
I was waiting for the no spec ad.

I think that the second version is the best, but none o them are excellent. Keep up the good work however!

The real answer is to have a logo that is a long letter addressed to said company to let them know what they are doing =)
