Hi all! I'm being asked for a quote for a packaging design project and I'm having a bit of trouble with the pricing. It's the first time I encountered this sort of project so I'm sort of lost. I hope you guys can help me out.

The situation is this: Client wants a logo design for the product which will be applied to the packaging (which I suppose would have its own costing), then they're requiring an design application for six variants for the front-of-package, a generic back-of-package, and five size variants. This is where I get lost. Should I be costing for the design for one variant application then multiply it by six, then a spearate cost for the generic back-of-package design? should I still be costing for the five size variants? Help!

My apologies. Mods please close this thread. Just read the "No pricing discussions" bit.

No need to close it, we just can't discuss specific pricing. There is no problem with discussing ways of pricing as long as actual amounts aren't mentioned. Unfortunately it's the weekend so it might be monday before anybody responds. :)

In a situation like this, you're looknig at quite a large project so I would actually price it as a project - but thats how I quote on all jobs any way.

I would work it as 6 designs - the only effect 5 size variations is going to have will be when you come to get the dies made up... rather confussing the quote more than needs be, perhaps you should exclude the dies from the quote initially if you're in a rush - if not include this as a surcharge... but do make it clear to the client that the dies arent included - and will be an additional cost.

I hope that helps.

we generally start with an initial design fee. Then if the subsequent designs are adaptations of this we charge a lower fee per adaptation- We often work in different languages - so the initial design would be in th eprimary language and then we would have to drop in and format each text and generate the final artwork, etc. It would be hard to justify charging a complete new design in this case!

Anotrher thing that works quite well for us is charging a "corporate identity" package which is more tha just a logo. It involves generating the complete identity for the company - so the logo, coroporate colours, typefaces, and the basic stationery elements (business cards, letterheads, envlopes, email headers and footers, etc.) once this is done then each new job is charged on a job for job basis, but adhering to the Corp ID.

We don't ever include things like the website or a brocuhrein the initial ID, but it allows you to give your client a visual reduction for add on jobs.

hope this might help....
