Alright kids, now that I've got my new camera (aka "Clicky"), it's time for me to start posting pix for you to see.
I'm by no means a photographer, and am still really new to photography, so bear with me, as some of these may be utter crap. But the only way to get better is practice right?
Very first picture it ever took:

Hey! I get knocked off line for a few days and come back to see you've got a new camera! Most excellent!!
Your photos are great, Bladez! I love the one of the rocks. And your snake(s?), what's it's name? Really nice shots. Your snake looks very curious! :)
Bladez
09-16-2008, 08:47 PM
Thanks tulip :D I was wondering where you were! I've missed you!
That snake is Erinys. I have 2 more in seperate tanks. (Kihone and Onyx)

09-16-2008, 08:51 PM
Aww, I missed you too! *tackle hugs Bladez!* (I've got several days of tackle hugs built up, I'll probably be obnoxious the next few days! Everyone's gonna get sick of me real fast! :p)
I was going crazy not being able to get online and on GDF! I can't complain though, we still had power, it could have been worse. Hard to believe a hurricaine's leftovers can do so much damage all the way up in NE Ohio! I heard hundreds of our power company trucks were helping in Texas, not expecting we'd have so much backlash up here.
Neat names, how is Erinys and Kihone pronounced? What kind of snakes? Very cool looking. Just keep them away from our pet rats! :D

Nice shots, Bladez. I got a chuckle out of the rock, paper, scissors banners too. Just curious, what kind of aperture setting did you use for the snakes?

Neat names, how is Erinys and Kihone pronounced? What kind of snakes? Very cool looking. Just keep them away from our pet rats!
Erinys = E-rin-eez (one of the greek fates)
Kihone = Key-own (greek goddess snow)
Erinys is a Sunglow Corn Snake
Kihone is a Snowcorn Corn Snake
Onyx is a Mexican Black King Snake.
I'll get pix of all 3 of em up soon.
That is great. Is that a building in Calgary I assume? yea, all of those were taken here in town just on my lunch break (except the snake pix)
I'm so not a snake fan, but those are nicely done. I too like the rock, paper, scissors. What kind of shop/company is that?

My camera does that too a bunch... I need to figure out why (its an auto focus)!
Do you have a lens that has a MF/AF switch on it? Check that. Manual focus/Auto Focus. Otherwise, try pressing on the shutter button halfway so the camera has a chance to focus and then take the picture.

I'm starting to get the hang of Apertures and shutter speeds and such. keeping my camera on manual, rather than automatic so I have to do the work. Next will be to start working with more motion shots to see if I can do it without the blurs. then night shots.

Lookin' good there, Bladez. The bulk of my photographic knowledge is limited to one class in college so I'm certainly no genius, but one thing you could try is using the flash outdoors. Mainly I'm thinking of the grasshopper pics. With the flash you could pull more detail out of the shadows.

Last night was our first major snowfall of the season, so I figured it was time to play with my camera a bit more. Sadly, I don't have a tripod, and with it being cold, I needed a fast shutter speed, and a higher ISO, so the pix are a bit grainy. But hey, now I know right? Gotta love learning by trial!

I understand that Scissors can beat Paper, and I get how Rock can beat Scissors, but there’s no way Paper can beat Rock. Paper is supposed to magically wrap around Rock leaving it immobile? Why the hell can’t paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can’t paper do this to people? I’ll tell you why, because paper can’t beat anybody, a rock would tear that sh*t up in 2 seconds. When I play rock/ paper/ scissors, I always choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I punch them in the face with my already clenched fist and say, oh sh*t, I’m sorry, I thought paper would protect you.~so says my sister

Our chinook is ending tonight, so maybe it'll make it down to you. I'm trying, to get it there faster, but the only box I can fit it in is way to expensive to send via FedEx, UPS and DHL, so it's just gonna have to to air mail. Hopefully it makes it.

Seriously, I have nightmares about snakes. I wouldn't go near them. I'm glad I live in Ireland and good old St. Patrick drove them all away.
That and fish. Don't show me any pictures of fish.
I was out camping with a friend last week and he fishes. I was saying we should go swimming in the lake, he then got onto a story on how Pike can sometimes eat a duck (or duckling) by dragging it under the water. I didn't want to go swimming anymore.

Awh, phobia suck don't they?
I can feel your pain as that is pretty much how I feel about anything more than a bathtub full of water.
I have to check almost every night, especially if Bladez is not at home, to make sure that the snakes are all in their cages. I dont' mind them in their cages, or to hold them, but roaming around my house wild and free just gives me shivers.

verrry nice - is it just you taking the shots Bladez? And do you just have to stick to the paths, or can you 'off road' into the wilderness?
Audentia
07-15-2009, 03:59 PM
We don't have to stick to the paths Foz. We do sometimes hit deer trails and scramble up the side of mountains where there is really no trail.
Those shots you see from the top of the falls and up in the creek area are from an "off trail" area.
In the national parks we have to stay to the trails because of wilderness protection but this particular hike is crown land (owned by the government) so we can go wherever we like.
Bladez takes all the shots... sometimes I suggest he tries something... but I do not take many photos at all. I just direct. ;)

This was my first attempt at shooting Fireworks.
Set up my tripod on a good hill, and used the tester fireworks to figure out where to frame my shot. Then I just slowed down my shutter (I think I was running it about 1/3rd of a second) and just kept clicking away, hoping to get lucky.
I have since learned another technique that involves keeping the shutter open the whole time and just covering the lens between blasts to get multiple exposures. I think I'm gonna try that at the Global Fest fireworks at the end of August :)

The first batch showing the bighorn sheep in Golden is about three hours away, and then Takakkawa Falls and Lake Louise are on the way from Golden about 2 hours out.

Love the shots from your and Audentia's vacation (love a lot of your shots, actually). I hope this is ok to do, but this one particular shot just screams for a treatment like this (imho). Just did this really quickly, but I think if you spent a little time in p/s, you would really have something here. Again hope you don't mind, just a thought...

No worries Rodney :) I like that people look at my photos and get ideas from them. And at least your a decent enough person to make sure it's alright. I have no problem with this photo being left up, as it shows another direction, and another persons take on pictures I've taken.

Great shots Bladez. The one of the bear on the big round rock sorta reminds me of my dog, except he doesn't look like a bear, and we don't have any rocks that big, and...never mind. Great shots. (stumbles off to get another beer and look at some more of Bladez's pics).

And I'm glad the bear on the rock could make you think of your non-bear-looking-dog with no big rocks around Rodney. That's kinda what I was going for with that shot. I had you in mind the whole time :D
Ned, we totally lucked in! That day was really cool and overcast, and the only time I've ever seen that many animals out and active at the zoo. Usually they're all sleeping in a back corner somewhere that you can't see 'em. I've never seen the tigers playing!!
They must've known you were coming, Bladez! xD

Poor Bladez. I'm glad he's a good sport!
That pic makes me think of one of the zoos back home. They had a prairie dog exhibit, but didn't put enough of a barrier under the enclosure to keep them from burrowing out. Now there are prairie dogs all over the zoo. Some are out in the middle of lawns, others actually come up inside other exhibits.

Ok, time to change it up a little. No more rappel pictures. Back to fireworks!
Beginning of August was Globalfest here in Calgary. Every year, there are 5 teams competing in a fireworks competition. These are from Team Canada. I was playing with my new remote shutter release, so some the shutter stayed open for a good 30 seconds, some it was roughly 1/3 of a second. And a variant thereof....

I'm glad that I've gotten so much feedback from you guys on my photos. Now I'm looking for a little more help. A camera store, and newspaper here in town are having a photography contest, with a prize of $5000 worth of equipment from the camera store.
Here are the details:
The Calgary Herald and The Camera Store invite you to enter our second annual My Calgary Digital Photography contest. Just submit your best images of life in Calgary, its people places and idiosyncricies, for your chance to win a photography prize package valued at over $5000.00.
Your original digital images of My Calgary are eligible for the competition. We ask that you also include a short note about what inspired you to shoot your photograph.
Simply upload your images below, three per person, files no larger than 5 MB each, by midnight on October 22, 2009. A panel of expert judges will select the winner and three runners-up, all to be announced Sunday, October 25 at the 2009 Digital Photography Expo at the Telus convention Centre.
I've got a bunch of photos at home that I've done that have never made it on here, which I am going to go through, but I was wondering if there's any in this thread (or this one (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30673&highlight=live)) that perhaps you think would be a good choice to enter as 1 of the 3 photos. Any feedback would be great. (just remember, it has to be of the city, so all my waterfall and nature shots are out, which sucks as that's what most of my stuff is)
Thanks again guys!

I don't know about others, but I absolutely love cemeteries, the older the better. This one doesn't seem particularly old, but the way you've captured some of the aspects is just wonderful Bladez. And I agree with Typically, the first one in the second batch is great, very evocative.

Actually, Urst, believe it or not, but that's one of the oldest cemeteries (http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dsucha/unionhist.html) in Calgary. The first bodies were buried there in 1892. It's also one of the biggest in the city.
And I'm the same as you. I love cemeteries. Especially the older ones! There's one by my moms place I want to check out too. The small church there is abandoned and boarded up, and there's probably only about 50 graves in it, but it's really cool looking.

A lot of the stones you see there that are engraved with 1892 on them and older were reconstructed. The originals were made of sandstone in some cases (because there was a law at one time after a huge fire that every building had to be built from sandstone) which of course disintegrates too quickly (and alot of these stones and the bodies were moved when they decided that the spot they chose originally, see Bladez history link above, was not suitable).
However that said... we live in a very dry climate... so some of those stones that are that old are well preserved because of it. Like papyrus surviving in the desert, stone does well in Calgary because it's so dry.
This is a pretty good article on the sandstone city if you are interested...

Not much to it Rodney. Set up my tripod, approx a 20 second shutter, no lights, door closed, think I was using about f16, ISO 400. Once the shutter was open, I popped the flash from each side with a wide angle diffuser, and 2 or 3 from below to get the different glitter showing, and to pull the white. Did it all on angles to avoid any kind of hot spots reflecting in the glass.
Hardest part was trying to focus it properly. It's actually not that easy to tell if frost is at it's sharpest or not *LOL*
Thanks for the comments guys :) I've never really thought about selling to istock...not even really sure how to go about it. May have to look into that soon tho...it's an interesting idea for sure. I just don't know if my shots are good enough to really sell. (tho I guess there's only 1 way to find out right?) I've only had interest shown in 1 picture I took, and that was for a website. Schmap.com is running one of my photos (www.schmap.com/calgary/introduction_history/p=60302/i=60302_55.jpg) in the Calgary Stampede section of their calgary attractions. It's a non-paying thumbnail kinda thing, but at least it's something.
