Hi, could someone with IE5 on a Mac and screen resolution at least 1024x768 do a screenshot of the following page and post it as a JPEG for me?

I have a client who is reporting problems in IE5 Mac but he can't work out how to do a screenshot. And I don't have a Mac!

PDFs are no good as I can't seem to open them if they were created on a Mac.

Thanks a lot.

Goes a bit funny in Safari:

Thanks very much ReedHendrix. Very useful.
Clearly some bugs in Safari. For some reason it doesn't seem to pick up the 'no-repeat' value on bg images.
And very strange about the right hand border in Explorer too.
I'll have to do some research.

OK I found out a few things, incase it helps anyone.

Safari has a strange bug where it is sensitive to where in the 'background' attribute you put the repeat value.

background: #000 url(image.gif) no-repeat left top; = OK
background: #000 url(image.gif) left top no-repeat; = Bug tripped

Also it seems like you can't use negative lengths on the background-position in Safari. Ask me if you want an explanation.

All these things should be fixed now on the page.

I'm still not sure why the background on the right hand side in Explorer just stops like that. Does it happen every time the page is loaded in IE5 Mac?

Another question: the gradient on the background has visible stripes. I've tried using high quality jpg file instead of gif, but I still get it. How can I improve that?

You might want to try to set the width of the body to 100%. Why did you give the body an id? You can only have one id of the same name per page. Right now it won't validate.

Maybe try PNG for the background.

Good idea, I'll try setting the body width to 100%.

I give the body an id to allow me to use the same stylesheet for different pages and apply different styles to common elements.

For example, if you have a common element

<div id='nav'>.....</div>

on every page, then I can style it differently as follows:

body#type1 div#nav { ... }

I didn't realise it wouldn't validate though. How about if I use a class instead?

Guess I could try a png. There's only browser issues with pngs if you have transparency, right?

if it helps, a screen shot on a mac is - hold down apple key and shift and hit 4, drag the cross hair over what part of your screen you want to capture.

easy,

Yes, classes can be reused throughout the page.

PNG should work fine. PNG-8 transparency is supported by IE (not alpha-trans though). PNG-24 alpha-trans doesn't work in IE and neither does reg trans (I think). I have also noticed that IE tends to make the PNGs color be a shade off, but that shouldn't matter with a gradient background. I just remember the time I tried to make a nav and header that wrapped around the top left corner all out a mix of PNG and GIF, but IE was making the PNG a shade different than the GIFs so it didn't match. Was a pain in the ass.

Hmm, I have all sorts of other images in gif/jpeg format that need to tie in. Maybe I'll leave it rather than redo them all as png.
I'll bear it in mind though.

Neil, thanks for the info, I'll see if that helps him.

unless he's in OS9
then it's command shift 3 and go find it on the hard drive as Picture 1 (or 2 or whatever)
