Not even close to being finished, but here's my first shot at the www.DesignChapel.com style:

I like it but something smells funny, Oh wait nothing smells what happen to the nouse?
Well on a more serious note, pretty good job. I like the shading especialy the pants. You might want to go with a little lighter on the neck I think the contrast is to strong and makes it look like an older woman.
So did you hand draw this and then trace the objects? Or is it a scan and trace(meaning a picture)?

She also has no ankles just disembodied feet floating in the air, sorry I just couldn’t pass that up. Great job! I’m curious when you made the curves did you just place point, point, point or did you make actual curves?

i started tracing with the pencil tool, which created a series of points for me. now it's time to tweak the curves by adjusting the tension on the curve points. fun, fun!

Have you ever experimented with Adobe streamline?

thanks guys! i've played with streamline and actually started this lil' project using it, but could never really get the paths that i was looking for. there were lots of problems with the sweater highlights blending with the background lights and whatnot. i really have to work on the face, hair, and socks today. :)

In my opinion I think the best program for creating images like this is the Coral Suite.
I worked for a screen printing company a while back. They used coral and to trace things which we did often (like recreate faxed logos, yuck). But I found their node tool much superior to Illustrators path tool.

i've been brainwashed into thinking that the holy triumverate of programs are: Illustrator, Photoshop and Quark. i am giving InDesign a look-over though. :) Honestly, i've never had a problem with Illustrator's path manipulation tools...what's the difference in Coral?

Well maybe my knowledge of Illustrator in limited but I know in Coral Draw you can specify the exact location of a path point with the X&Y. Also unlike in lllustrator you can manipulate the path by selection between two points without having to create a new point and choosing the Direct Selection Tool. This lets you trace very quickly and very accurately. Something I've tried over and over again in Illustrator but is a pain in the a$$.
As a matter of fact I do all of my tracing in Photoshop. It just behaves better for me. Like for example I traced these lenses in photoshop and them edited them in illustrator.

It's looking really good but the gray skin shadows on the neck and the hand still don't look right. Maybe use a more skinish color?

check out the porportions, and also the tones on the neck and face. the light seems to be hitting on her right side, but the colors dont show that...more contrast. and i think the neck shouldnt be lighter, but it should be a tad darker, especially on the left side, since the light is hitting on the right..
