As I am looking for typefaces for my identity - I realized I cannot just rely on my system fonts. I have a large collection over the years but most of them were free or from friends and some of them are corrupted, etc.... I do not want to install these on my new machine.

What would your suggestions be to build a nice clean set of starter fonts? Are there any font collections out there that won't break my bank?Any favorites?

I'm also interested in a good set of "starters." Currently, I have very little more than the stock fonts that came with the Adobe suite. Probably one of the primary projects of mine would be a quarterly newsletter, so if anybody has some good standard fonts to recommend for that format, I'd be glad to hear them.

when our company got Corel Suite 7 or 8 it came with a Corel Fonts cd which had about 1500 fonts... still using them to this day. The current Corel suite still comes with them i believe. Might be something to look into.

I buy from the major font foundrys. Mostly Open Type these days.

Quirk started a great resources thread back in May. Check that out...

Where is Quirk, anyway? I don't remember seeing any posts for a while...

I mostly buy my fonts as needed from myfonts.com

My "starter" fonts, as it were, were pretty much the batch that came with my design software as I bought it.

I know...I wish I had all the money in the world to build my desired font library. Until then, I am slowly saving up and purchasing fonts. I have bought a couple from H&FJ (typography.com) and also some from Veer.com.

Veer has some more affordable options - I do love everything at H&FJ though it is spendy! (for an in-house designer like me who only freelances occasionally - it is definitely slow-going to build my personal library)

I don't have to money to buy a collection although that would be nice.

TheAndy - I like Verlag or Whitney as sans serifs (H&FJ) I've yet to really settle on a serif. I use Berling Antiqua at work mostly. I've also purchased a slab serif, Archer, from H&FJ that I enjoy!
