Spent the entire week experimenting with the layout, looking at other GD's resumes, reading font compatibility posts, looking for fonts - here's what I produced!

2 Versions - the difference is the size and placement of my name, which I'm having a bit of trouble with.

I'm a first year GD student and I'm looking for PT jobs at local print shops, hence the dire need of a presentable resume. I didn't want to do anything over the top or fancy - just simple colors, neat and tidy presentation.

I'm still deciding if I should fill the left bottom part with other info (list of skills), or just leave it blank. Probably the latter.

The red Jimmy was a way to let people know that I prefer to be called Jimmy. (NOT because I think my name is so cool. Hope that's not the message being sent across  )

Please let me know what you all think! Going to work on my cover letters now, which will share the same fonts and the red!

PS: Besides the normal 20lb bond paper, what other types of paper do you guys print your resume on? 20 Bond feels too flimsy to me, so I'm trying it out on 28lb laserprint paper. Is that overkill? The last thing I want to come across to employers is pretentious or overkill but I just want my resume to look AND feel nice :D

Second version is better. Yes, I like the way the name lines up with the columns in the first version, but it's just way too big for a resumé, and it makes your body copy look miniscule.

Yeah, after I printed a test page, my name was way too big in version 1. Definitely sized it down for V2.

You have MS Word in the software experience section twice.

Resume looks good, i'd prefer oldstyle numerals, and an en-dash (with no space around it) for the durations of time. But I think the biggest problem is that none of your experience is design-related. From the achievement section, it looks like you've done some design before, you should probably expand on that.

First year GD student looking for printshop work, TTT. Doubt it will be for design at this stage. More like loading and stacking and cutting...

Thanks covax!

Yeah Tom, unfortunately I have 0 design work experience, hence I'm dropping resumes all over my town's print shops - don't care what I do, just want to be in the that environment.

PD - I almost told them that I wouldn't mind just serving coffee or taking out the trash only just to be in the shop. :P

Quick glance...lose the italics. No need for any of it really.

Plus it doesn't fax very nicely.

Oh, quick Q about fax - is it used alot for sending resumes? I always thought it's better to either physical or pdf file. Or is fax a good way to send resumes as well?

I got my current job by faxing in my resume. ;)

anothefoo, do you have a cover letter that goes with this? Something that explains you are a poor starving design student who wants to learn the print end of the business from the ground up so your graphic files will be most excellent and not cause any printers headaches in your future career?

Then let the printer decide where ground level is.

If you don't have something like that, sorry to say it but that resume would go into the old circular file. I'd think it had gotten lost on the way to the lab.

I would also lose the italics, especially in the words you were trying to highlight towards the bottom, like FAMILY. Its in a different font too isn't it? Either way I find it distracting when reading through.

Also, did you forget Photoshop?

Nah, I just know how to 'play' with photoshop. Right now taking courses that teaches Photography + Photoshop.

Once I'm adequate enough, I'll throw it on there.

Thanks for all the input guys, really appreciate it! :D
