There's been a lot of that flying around. That things beards are good for thread (the site is almost exactly like this one) was a promotion for some social networking site I think. This is promotion I can deal with though. :D

I don't think so, no. It looks more like the site became a bit of a meme, and the creators noticed the high traffic and all the diggs and stumbleupons, so decided to cash in on it with merch. That's the way it works with these things.... The shirts would be meaningless unless the website was popular first.
