Hi there. I manually drew out the tables and cells on this page:
www.gunnar.ca/homepage.htm (http://www.gunnar.ca/homepage.htm)
I am trying to recreate the same table layout by inserting tables and punching in their values instead of drawing them out. I draw a table (like the left one on the existing page) with 9 rows, than a single cell table for the center image. Problem is, the left and right tables get shifted down to the bottom of the page - so I can't have the left, center and right tables aligned. Is there not a way to keep the 3 tables at the same vertical position? Why does my left and right tables get shifted down?
Any help aprreciated greatly.
Thank you!

I don't use tables for positioning anymore, but just wanted to let you know that your layout forces a horizontal scrollbar at 800x600, incase you didn't realise.

you could always put it together in photoshop and save for the web in slices. then use an image map for the links, if you use image maps for links i suggest you use a text link that says site map some where on the page that links to a page with nothing put text links.
if you are using 9 tables for the pictures on the bottom may i suggest that be one column with all the pictures inserted side by side and the verticle and horizontal space be set to say 5 or so.

You can create a three column layout using CSS.
To get some sample layouts, try the sites:

i wouldn't recommend the web slices in photoshop and image maps. a big no-no for loading time and indexing for search engines. either use css for positioning or do what bp suggested.

^^ What 3howards said. Imageready is bad bad bad. It is also very inaccessable to screen readers.
Another good place to find some CSS layouts is http://www.glish.com/css

hows that? Many people slice images. I have had no problems doing it that way. Something that is that small and at the right resolution should load up fairly fast.
Exporting it as an html and opening it in dreamweaver to make image maps is what i do, i don't use image ready.

that is the beginner's way of doing it and is very inefficient. i don't mean to call you a beginner, it's just that it is bad practice for web development. most designers slice images, but the good ones don't use the html that photoshop or imageready produces because it can bog down your loading time with redundant code. and it's horrible for search engine optimization. how is a search engine going to index your links when there's no text to go with those links? bad, bad, bad...

*nods head to what 3howards says*
Trash what IR gives you and hand code. It's the best/most efficient way do develope websites. Working on something that another designer (actual or self-proclaimed) gives me, and finding out everything is done w/ IR or an editor (like FP or DW) makes me absolutely NUCKIN FUTS!
I'm working w/ this guy right now on an account. This guy works for some crappy add agency down in FL and does all his webdev through Adobe GoLive 6. None of his code is clean, optimized, or efficient in any way, shape, or form. Not only do I have to put up w/ at least 1 project from this idiot every week, I have to deal w/ his ego. He gets all pissy if I so much as change a file name (bear in mind that WE are hosting the site... not the add agency). If you want to gasp in utter agony and horror at this piece of complete crap, then have at it: www.traceyroad.com
Note: I take no responsibility for this garbage...

Well, they person asked for some suggestions and I gave both information on tables and a choice of slicing. It doesn't mean that this is the way I am telling someone to do it, but it is another way and all options should be kept open. Just because you don't approve of the way doesn't mean that it can't be done, because it can. There are many options on working this out and all advise is just that advise, I don't think that bashing someone elses opinion is very cool, lets hear some original ideas from you. Many people work in fireworks, dreamweaver, photoshop and other programs, I have been building sites for too many years to be called a beginner or having beginners ways. State your own ways, but really, all this 'bad, bad', just was plain crazy. Pompis
