I’ve got $20 left in the bank without a single job prospect on the horizon, and I really want to buy Pelso for $19. What should I do?

What is Pelso, a font?
You can't eat a font.
You want it? Charge it to your next job.
;)

I would've said that it's only $20 so just get it if you like it... Until I read the "only $20 in the bank" part. Dude, don't even think about it... If you actually need it you can charge it to a client as PD said. You know how many packets of Ramen noodles you can buy for $20? :D

I was thinking more along the line of a $14 pork round (slice it into thin boneless chops) and a sack of potatoes. Ramen Noodles give me the creeps.

Too healthy, PD! You're right though. You can slice it up then freeze it in sections, and take a slice out to thaw whenever you need one. Pork is very inexpensive meat, and good meat, too. I could eat a pound of pork a day. ;)

Maybe sell something of yours, a posession or your services whatever works, then you can eat and have the font other than that do what the other guys said

You'd spend the last of your money on a single-weight caps-only font? Not the most versatile use of your money. ;)

Ned

...you mean it's not an investment into your future?

A favorite line of my grandkids when we give them something as a gift and they notice it doesn't accept batteries: "What's it DO??"

I would spend the money, but ONLY if you can get some sort of personal gratification out of the font as your stomach grumbles. Will you feel better after spending 15 minutes alone with your new font? Does it come in a package or do you download it? There's no real personal gratificatio from downloading a font. The sheer joy of seeing the delivery truck pull up in front of the house is, well....

You really have to think this one out.
I have (and I'll never get these 3 minutes back either).

Well, the satisfaction you get from your font may outlast the satisfaction duration from a meal. But I think you could stretch $20 out to a few meals, if you're thrifty and don't eat out. ;)

Rice and beans (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=318556&highlight=rice+beans+goya#post318556) is a good cheap make-at-home meal... Much more nutritious than ramen noodles...

If I eat beans, I always eat it with corn. They form a complete protein together.

Either whole beans mixed with kernel corn, or frijoles refritos spread on corn tortillas should probably both do it for you, though I imagine the whole beans and corn would likely contain more natural nutrients.

So for you, personal gratification = protein + farts? :D

Beans & rice is a complete protein too, I make chick peas & brown rice cooked in chicken broth (& veggies) all the time. Super cheap & yummy.

Oh, I didn't know beans formed a complete protein with rice, but I have always known that they go well together. :D

So for you, personal gratification = protein + farts? :D

Obviously. What could be more personal gratifying than that feeling you get when you release the pressure? ;)

I knew this point would come up, which is a fair and completely logical one. But, yes, I would, when the single-weight/caps-only font looks like Pelso. Now, if it were a cent over $20...

Also, regarding my survival, did I mention, I could stand to lose a few pounds, so food comes second to exercising my typography muscle.

Ned

Somehow, I don't think owning a font constitutes as typography exercise. ;)

Instead, try some typography projects, like laying out publications or designing posters around text content. This can be done with any font(s).
