Holy omg.
I had a webs designer use the files I created for a base idea for my website and he did. He took care of everything: even registering the domain name, and finding a server to host it on.

After a while I decided that I would like it in my name so I could be responsible for the payment of the domain (yearly costs to stay active on the net) and have all the files with me.

So he told me it was simple. Create an account with the hosting company and he would transfer over my files to the CPanel.

This has turned out to be a total headache.
None of my log ins seem to work, my website is down now (he had to remove me from HIS control panel for it work or something), and even though we are both talking to support over there we aren't really getting any answers.

The only thing I did get was an email from one of the tech support guys saying that all I needed to do now was re-create my email accounts in cPanel > Email Accounts, and upload content to your public_html folder.

When I finally got someone on the chat support, all he said was that I need to do this using an FTP program called Filezilla but when I checked THAT out I couldn't decide if I needed "client" or "server". I assume client, but I don't know...

As you can tell, I know NOTHING about how to do this, I mean, what's a public html folder? I didn't know this was going to be so hard...it's almost like I am building my site from the bottom up and I have no website design experience so I'm a little stressed about how I can get this rectified.

I can't even get into my CPanel because my site is down. I mean, I could be losing customers. I'm so stressed...does anyone have any idea of what the above means or what I could do?

Thanks in advance........

You need Filezilla Client ... that's what I use. When you install it bring it up and choose File> Site Manager > New Site then add your host (www.whatever.com (http://www.whatever.com)) your user name (the host provided you with this) and your password (also provided by your new host) then click ok or connect.

Hope that helps.

*deep breaths* Can you connect to the FTP site they are telling you to? You can use Filezilla, Fetch or Cyberduck for an FTP connection. Once you download one of those applications, you will need to enter the Server/Host name (where you are connecting to), your Username and password. Then you are in the root of your site. Once there you should see a bunch of folder, one should say http_something-or-another. Mine says "httpdocs" Just drop all your files in there and if all else is correct, your site should work.

Make sense?

a public html folder is a folder that is just that, a folder that is open to the public to view all that is in there. There might also be a https folder, so make sure you select the correct one!

That's it?? THAT is what I am stressing about??
God I need to chill. Haha.
Well, I am pretty sure I know the username and password, but I might ask them to resend it to me just so I am "for sure" sure.
I'll let you know if I have any other problems. Wish me luck this is totally new territory for me to navigate.
Oy.

OK I tried it. Got this error message: Status: Connection attempt failed with "EAI_NONAME - Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known".
Error: Could not connect to server

Hmmm? What's wrong? Should I just try and contact the hosting company again? Probably eh...argh.

Seriously? A good hosting company should offer migration services... for this reason specifically. Just hand them the info and let them move the site for you.

I've never used Filezilla so can't help there. I use Transmit for all my FTP dealings. You might try that instead.

If you've just got basic website files then all you have to do is drag and drop your files into the public_html folder. Nothing simpler.

...assuming there are no problems with your domain/hosting account, of course. If you've given enough time for any (as applicable) domain/nameserver changes to propagate through, and you still can't log into your control panel, then it sounds like it's a problem they need to fix at their end.

If you get to a point where you're fed up and want a referral to a GOOD hosting company let me know and I'll hook you up with a discount code. The guys who host my sites (and my clients' sites) are fantastic.

make sure you use your host(server name) not your domain name ;)

Ok if i can help or add to what anybody said you should download filezilla client thats what i use also its so easy trust me sweety so dont even waist ur time getting stressed its like copying and pasting thats how easy it is ok when u finish downloading filezilla. open it in the fields Host, Username, Password, Port

host can be like ur www.site.com
username can vary its not always ur site log in sometimes u might have to contact ur hosting company for this also the password
port no need to worry about the port number then click quick connect you will see some text going up if ur sucessfull it will be in green saying ur log in now to the bottom on the left are ur files on ur computer and to the right are the files on ur server you will want to place ur files in a folder on ur sever called "public html" or "www" also if u dont know just incase for ur site to pop up u must have the main page home page intro pg etc called "index" if i missed anything let me know
