I was wondering what percentage of a graphic designers work goes to package designs? I see alot of package design workfrom student GDers in various college catalogs, are these type of jobs harder to come by?

Package design is almost always a basic part of any college GD course, usually as part of a several week project involving marketing and advertising of a 'product' (mine was a complete identity package for an imaginary small pub/microbrewery - from 6-pack carrier to table menus to signage) . And they are usually more impressive and fun to show in a college catalog than a flat poster.
As a freelancer you may fall into package design once in a while. Working for an advertising and marketing agency may get you doing more of it for various clients. Depends. Pursue it exclusively if it tickles yer fancy to do so. Just as tough to get into as any other part of this business.

i'd say about 30-35% of the work i do is for package design... i wouldn't say package design jobs are hard to come by, there are companys everywhere that are trying to sell 'thier' products.. but i would say the ones that are harder to come by are the bigger companies/maufactures that have products for mass production.
