...my brothers ex, she might be the one they are confusing with barbie, she was tall dumb and blond after all. Her last known location after becoming the wicked witch is west virginia...maybe someone had some sense and sent her back to oz

Basically, I introduced legislation because the Barbie doll, I think, gives emphasis on if you're beautiful, you don't have to be smart

What about Doctor Barbie? or Veterinarian Barbie?

So, what he's saying is smart girls cannot be attractive. How does he know that barbie isn't smart?

Drorain

he's more apt to appreciate stripper slut barbie and trailer trash nurse barbie...

yup probably busy 'appreciating' them in his closet right now

i think TV shows like the hills, and the OC are worse than a barbie doll. all those people care about are purses, cars, and who they are going to bang next. why doesn't he get that shit off the TV and do us all a favor :D

cause she's plastic...duh, everyone knows you need a little strawberry jam in your head basket to be able to provide brain surgery

LOL at Dro, and I agree with Typ ... there's far worse crap on TV that needs to go (not banning ii, because free speech is good, but simply letting the stations know that those shows suck and need to go away.)

I could care less about Barbies. Its the Bratz dolls that annoy me. Those are the skankiest dolls I think I've ever seen.

Yes, Bratz outskank Barbie any day.

Wow.. how about teaching your children what is right and wrong instead of relying on the world to do it for you. I'm not necessarily for or against censorship... more for parents teaching their children some morals and decency. And not letting them wear mini skirts that show their ass when they are 10! I don't think barbie has anything to do with it

wow that was a bit ranty. my bad.

I fully agree. Some parents lately have been trying to let the state, read someone else, do the parenting for them.

Craig B
03-04-2009, 09:33 PM
I only let the TV parent my child ... not the state. At least I know that the TV is a good substitute parent ...

I was very anti-Barbie, and still am for the most part but my daughters LOVE Barbie, and in comparison to the Bratz and other similar dolls on the market Barbie is tame these days. I don't think banning any toy is a good idea (and you know there'd be an underground market for it anyway). I think if anything should be removed it should be the advertising for them and all childrens toys, ugh it's sickening, I don't mind my kids watching tv, but the commercials almost make me put a hammer through the screen lol.

I always liked playing with Barbie .. although I never had one until I made enough money to buy one. My Mother didn't like them.

Is it weird that I would hang them off my ceiling light with yarn so they could fly? :D

I still think my Barbie's made me more creative ... I learned how to crochet so I could make them outfits and I sew to make them pillows and blankets for their house.

I don't think I turned out too brain damaged from them :p

I love it :D

Seriously? I agree with Audentia and the rest of you. Ultimately the responsibility of anything a child does should come down to their parents. Good parenting is showing your children responsibility and right from wrong. If the parents allow their children to think or tell them Barbie is a stupid blonde skank, that's what they'll think. I don't think children would come up with those ideas on their own.

Don't complain that your children have "bad" or "wrong" views when you have the ability to inform them and help them shape those views.

Sorry, guess I got off on a bit of a rant. My ex-sister-in-law is a very bad influence to my nephews.

Barbie and I were born in the same year. Yep, we hit the big 5-0 this year.

Ever hear the story though that Mattel stole the original design for this doll from a German manufacturer, that modelled 'Lillie' after a 'streetwalker' comic character developed for a German newspaper?

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/1997/11/26harlot.html

The ironic thing is that Mattel itself has become famous for being so uber-heavy hitting on anyone, anything, or anybody who comes even remotely close to threatening its prime 'intellectual property'.

Great, because legislating perception is such a high priority right now.

Some people just don't understand that you can't legislate this kind of stuff, it doesn't do anything beyond making a certain interest group happy. And that's coming from either side of the ideological aisle.

Not to mention that you can just drive across the border to a WallyWorld in a neigboring state and smuggle them back in...or maybe they're going to pass Prohibition Barbie.

Interesting link, Broacher. I'd never heard that, but I'm not surprised. I saw a recent exhibit of Barbies at the Daytona MOA. I found it interesting that "growing up skipper" was not among those displayed. Also, looking at the early face of Barbie, she was much more made up and sexxed up than today's Barbie.

urstwile
03-06-2009, 05:56 AM
The Barbie's I grew up with were definitely sexxed up. Sort of. Of course, their breasts had no nipples, but then again, Ken had no junk, so I guess that's fair.

Broacher
03-06-2009, 03:39 PM
Well, the sexxed up comment is interesting. The original character design of Lilie, was based on the comic character which started as a cute baby character-- and a filler comic for the paper. The editor didn't like the baby so the cartoonist simply added adult curves and limbs and well...

More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild_Lilli_doll

Adult limbs and proportions grafted onto an infant's face. In a way, it simply short circuits the struggle in our culture between the sexual evolutionary power of neotony and our cultural taboo of pedophilia.

And then there's Barbie, of course.

WannaBrie
03-06-2009, 04:09 PM
What I meant by "sexed up" is the long black eyelashes and the red lips and prominent eye shadow. That Lili doll has the same face as the original Barbie. Barbie's face now is softer, less makeup. And for anyone that doesn't remember, "growing up skipper" was Barbies youngest sister (Francie was the other one) who, when you turned her arm, grew breasts.

As far as the struggle in our cultural struggles, just look at the horrifying spectacle of the "tot beauty pageants".

Um... say what WannaBrie! I wish I could just turn my arm and grow boobs. that would be great.
I can't believe there was a doll like that... *scours ebay in the hopes to see one*
Crazy marketing on that one.

looks like Mattel may have found a loophole. CNN says they are making a teen version on Dora the Explorer.

Dora the Explorer going skank, moms fear (http://cnn.hu/video/#/video/showbiz/2009/03/06/am.costello.dora.teen.doll.cnn) <-- actual CNN headline.

wow... classy of CNN. Is skank even in the dictionary? It errors on my spell check. I would have thought that prevalent news sources could at least be "politically correct" with their jargon. But apparently not...
