does anyone know if there's a way to turn off illustrator's tendency to snap to document bounds? i know you can do it in photoshop but i haven't found a way to do it in illustrator. i have all the snap options unchecked in the view menu, and shapes aren't snapping to anything other than the document bounds. oh, and i'm using cs3.

not totally sure what you mean by snapping to bounds but if you go to the view menu near the bottom you can check or uncheck snap to point, snap to grid

i have snap to grid and snap to point unchecked, but my shapes still want to snap to the edges of my document. they're not snapping to anything else, just the outline that shows my document size.

after looking around a bit i'm not sure if i can do anything about it. i can work around it, its just a bit of a pain.

Did you customize your preferences at all?
The reason I ask is this sounds to me like a pref glitch and maybe chucking your prefs will fix it.
It sucks if you didn't save a copy of your custom settings though.

But is there an align to Artboard checkbox somewhere else?

i haven't customized preferences, but i chucked them anyway just to check. kinda seems to me like its improved a bit. i only notice it now when i'm zoomed in pretty far, if that makes any sense.

Odd, I've never had a problem with that. But I did find what you're describing. It seems to only occur at 600% zoom or higher. How odd.

I know that you can set guides that will allow snapping when zoomed in but not when zoomed out.

and mine seem to be like that too.

i never really noticed it until today. it was just a bit annoying when i wanted to drag a shape where i wanted it, but it didn't want to go there. i got around it by typing in values, but it would have been done a lot quicker if i could drag my shape to the right spot.

Turning off smart guides did for me.
