hey all,

Litle issue with indesign... im running CS4 on OSX

a client has sent me an .rtf file that contains a number of greek characters - alpha, lamda and so on, in whatis seemingly set in Arial. These characters display fine in TextEdit. However when the text is copied into Indesign, they display shaded pink, which usually means a missng font.

I have tried going into the glyphs palette in ID and inserting it that way, but the symbol doesnt appear anywhere.

However, in TextEdit, I can select the alpha symbol, go to Edit > Special Characters, and it appears in some sort of massive palette. So it would seem the glyph is in Arial somewhere, but for some reason ID cant view/access it? Is it something to do with unicode?

Thanks in advance :)

Paj, you probably need the OpenType version of Arial. Actually, I just looked in FEX and found Arial Unicode MS, which has over 38,000 characters. I'm guessing "MS" is Microsoft and it's installed with Office. The EULA says it's from Agfa-Monotype.

Mind me asking what the FEX part is about?

Oh, sorry Andy, that was before my second cup of coffee. FEX is short for Font Explorer, the typeface management system I use.

The new "Pro" version is paid (30-day trial available), but version 1.2.3 is still free...you can get both here (http://www.fontexplorerx.com/download/).

Oh, thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately I can't use this font manager since I can see you are using Mac and I am on a pc. :(

Do you have any suggestions or ideas as to which font manager for pc could be similar in quality and userfriendliness (also in price;)) and where to get it...?

Thanks in advance. :)

I keep forgetting FEX is Mac-only for now. There used to be a PC version. Maybe one of the PC users on the forum will step in with a suggestion. :)

Thanks..., I found FontSuite Lite on the net while doing a bit of googling. It's to be found here...

http://www.iseasoft.com/fontsuit.htm

There is a free and a paid version but the free has the limitation of not being able to activate/deavtivate ps fonts and another type of fonts which I do not remember.

I installed the free version and it looks quite nice and now am considering the paid version.

What do you think about that one...? :)
