i know in illustrator i can use the pen tool for line work and get nice curves...is it possible to do the same in photoshop?...or is this wishful thinking?

Or you can copy and paste the path(s) you draw in Illustrator directly into Photoshop, as an alternative.
I hope you're not hoping for line work resolution when you do that, though.

:D yes, i did get that far!...however, when i drew my line and stroked it, i got a raster result...i'd like a smooth vector result, if possible...can i open a .psd in illustrator to draw by chance?...off to try...

You can, to a certain extent, create vector results in Photoshop, if you use the Shapes. It's got limitations, and you need to bear in mind that Photoshop is meant to be a raster program, it's not meant to handle vector artwork comfortably.
