my whole purpose of joining this forum was to get a grasp on the "Designer" mindset, because I wanted to find a way to help. I don't know if everyone is familiar with sites such as Threadless and DesignbyHumans..but they only give the designers a small piece of the pie i.e..$2000 if you win...and they go on to make millions off of the design. What would be an ideal situation for you guys as artists/designers? What if there was a site that posted everyone's artwork. No voting or spec work, just whatever was selling on the site, the designers would get 50% or more? Again, I'm sorry if I'm being ignorant, I'm just trying to understand a little better, so I can try to help out the designer community. Thanks.

To not compete. I don't think anybody in this forum would agree that it's ok to compete for design work.

If you're talking about a website like ebay or etsy for graphic designers, well, I don't think that's a very reasonable way for designers to make a living, do you? And at 50% only? Who is getting the other 50%? I don't get it. Also, I don't know anyone who makes a living selling crafts on etsy, and anyone who makes a living off of ebay is usually selling someone elses products, not their own.

Well, I was thinking a site that host's and prints all the artwork on Tee shirts or any other medium, get's the other 50% to incur costs of the printing material and cost of printing, hosting the site and to keep the site growing. Doesn't have to to be 50% it was just an idea...I want to make an ideal situation for designers, a mecca for designers if you will, to post their art and get paid essentially a royalty for everything that is sold.

cool idea but the site would have to be massive if anyone could post designs to the site. are you thinking about a site like cafepress??

I dont understand this statment?.....

Im a student and i havent had to look for work just yet, but when i do im sure il have to COMPETE with the rest of the design world to get the job.

Or are you saying i should not apply for work when i know another designer has?

Also OP, what i think your saying is you want to create a site like cafe press, where i can sell my designs but you get a cut?

Oldat, I believe salsa means competing for spec work, where many designers submit work, but only one actually gets paid.

That i agree with. Spec is evil, and lives in the bellie of the business man who likes to save more money and not pay for pro work.

I think he means everyone wins, and for every item sold of a specific design the designer gets paid a royalty for it.

Basically everyone gets printed, but you get beans unless you've got the one special shirt because only 3 people buy it.

Riefnu, that's what the OP means, I'm pretty sure. I was referring to salsa's comment in post #2 about "To not compete."

Without a client what is being designed? This doesn't make much sense unless your talking about art work for sale.

yeah I think the original author is a little unclear what a graphic designer generally does.

50% of profits or 50% of retail price? I think people see retail price of a product and forget that design isn't the only thing that went into it.
