I would think that it probably has more to do with who you'd be doing the magazine layouts for or web developement for, end up at a small enough place and you'll probably get paid the exactly the same amount for doing both.
Match in the gas tank, boom boom.

i was shooting for a little larger of a company, such as like PC Magazine or Maxim (or so i was being hopeful anyway).

it all depends where you work...
i do magazine ads and web design...and i get paid as much as you would at an internship.
you shouldn't choose a career based upon the pay, you should choose your career based upon the one you'd be willing to do for less.
cause if your in deisgn just for the money, you've got a very very long road ahead of you.

Absolutely. You must not forget the endless stream of wild parties, the 'licence' to sneer, and the groupies.... oh, those groupies!
Reminds me: has anyone seen my black, sequined thong? (the one with the crop marks stitched on the front). Wanna check your hot tubs, please? (I'll send one of my choppers for pickup, if you're too 'busy'). Thanks.

oh hell, that was yours, Broacher? I FedEx'ed it to Magnus by mistake.
I haven't lost my mind... it's backed up on disk somewhere.

Pay will be based on your abilities, especailly in the web world.
A web designer who can do user interface, Flash, HTML, XML, java, asp, etc is going to do better than someone who does graphics only. Also, in my experience with web design, you wind up having to wear several hats. I've been designated the Producer AND production artist all on the same project before.
As for magazine layouts, there's not a whole lot of creative work, in my experience. Once the magazine is designed, you're just doing production work. Unless you're designing ads to go into magazines, then you get to do a little AD work, but not much.
Consider where you want to see yourself in 10 years. Web work has always pushed me into more gear-head work (but diverse), and magazine work has always been very print-production related.
It doesn't matter if you win or loose, it's how much cheese you get.
