I am currently in the process of making a series of poster, displaying the 10 rules of graphic design. These rules are poster form and made to be displayed in design studio's or universities. This is my self initiated brief and my most thought out work.
Here is one idea for one of the rules. Highlighting the fact that Helvetica was primarily a communicative typeface. But now is put into any form of design. They are many more decorative typeface to choose from.

The entire posters is decorated. Remove the type and its nothing BUT decoration... Not really the message your type says.

I agree. I dont' get the graphic at all and how it correlates.

Big decoration, tiny little type, message saying don't do it.
Reverse psychology...double time?

maybe just have all type but in the word decoration, instead of type, have all that decoration in the forms of the letters, kinda where it may be a bit difficult to read.
this will relay the message that too much decoration is hard to read, which equals less effective way of communication.
just a thought. have fun!!

I don't even agree with the "rule" let alone the design. You should watch the Helvetica movie.
i watched the helvetice movie. i made the design to contradict itself, because subliminally i wanted it too break the rules. maybe i never made that clear in the design. I have another design which i want to show with no decoration.
Does any one have any ideas for design rules. they can be funny, principal or just what you think. about the way designers should design.

Design rule #1: Hire a professional
Design rule #2: Follow rule number 1 to a 'T'.

To communicate you dont play mind games...its a complete contradiction.
How is the adverage Joe Bloggs meant to know you meant something subliminally?..

rules are made to be broken.
Look at this and tell me what you think.

has the concept completely changed here?
This poster says the opposite of the other...
I still don't get the banding across the picture either...
One of my favourite designer rule lists is by the great Dieter Rams:

If you came across these posters what would you think?
For me, it's a mess. There's nothing there to critique. Until you have a concept you don't have a design. It was the same problem with the North/South Divide project. You have a thought, an idea, something you want to say but you don't think it through very thoroughly. You want ten rules of design, post one, then ask us for the other nine. You get giddy with excitement at your own cleverness and use all your energy up before you get to the page. You throw bizarre, abstract ideas around in your head and fail to communicate them, distill them down to one simple thing, something that we can all understand. The problem isn't with the main idea, which sounds interesting, but with the execution.
Take a deep breath and really think about what you're doing. It frustrates me because i really like some of your design, and other times it's like this, and i have no idea why this huge swing exists.

Thank you for the comment.
Yes I do have weird things going around in my brain. When I was in HND I flourished with fresh ideas but now I am doing a degree It is all messed up. The computers suddenly crash losing all my work. Most programs will not work on certain machines, and all the computers are normally taken up by girls in tight wear pasting research into photoshop. I am all over the place at the moment. I will refine this idea down and post simple sketches and ideas.
