Someone posted a great link with a "template" showing finished panel sizes of a trifold 11 x 8.5" brochure a while ago (Kool? I think it might have been you...)
I've been assigned to do one, so Idid a forum searchbut can't find the thread.
Can anybody hook me up with the link?
Thanks in advance for any help!

If panel 1 backs panel 2 then they MUST have the same page width. Likewise with panel 6 backing panel 3 and panel 5 backing panel 4. Otherwise you'll have the creases in the right postions on one side but going through your artwork on the otherside.
I think that depends on the folds. Every printer I know of folds diffrently. Some fold even panels some fold front panel bigger then the other two some fold the middel and front even and back smaller. That is why it's great to use a template but ask your printer first.

Yes...great...no no..WONDERFUL advice benjo!
talk to your printer first :oP
Hey Benjo..slowly you are getting to creep in more and more :o)

I have used this template several hundred times and it works just fine. The reason that the inside panels are a few THOUSANDTHS of an inch smaller is because folds eat paper. The inside of a fold is shorter than the outside. The differences are very small but do exist. I took these measurments using as precise a scale as I could find. Sorry if my precision or lack of confused a couple of you but to just baldly state that my template is wrong due to differences of less than a 32nd of an inch is absurd. /emoticons/cool.gif

Think you're wrong there Benjo, if you want to achieve the perfect 6pp DL roll fold (which I'm assuming the incorrect template is for) then firstly the outside MUST back up the inside correctly (which it clearly doesn't on the template).
Then page 5 has to be 1 to 2mm shorter than pages 1 and 6 so that once it is folded it has enough room to lay flat.
I have this problem weekly with artwork supplied by designers that I have to correct for them!! Somebody must be sending out rogue templates!!!!! lol

Kool I completly trust your advice. Kirby your telling me to ask the printer is wrong? lol! Then you complain about designer sending you the wrong specs, hey maybe they took your advice.

I would take Kool's advice over pretty much any designer/printers that I know.

Wow, this is kind of absurd. Telling someone that a template they use is wrong. Unless they are coming to YOU to get it printed, I can't see how you can tell them it is wrong. Just as stated, every printer has there little quirks about how they do things. Obviously the first thing you do is call the printer and see what they may have. I think Morea was just looking for something as a guide. Not something that she would go out and preach is the ultimate template. I personally trust Kool. He has years of experience under his belt. I am not saying that you don't but I just think it's a little harsh to state that the template is 'wrong.'
Morea - my advise would be to use Kools template but before you send anything to the printer call them and get there specifics (or have Ben call). Don't worry about it too much. Good luck!

I use a template for concepts and mock ups. I always call my printer before 'finalizing' any designs.
I haven't lost my mind... it's backed up on disk somewhere.
So Kirby, socialD since you have both stated several times each that my template with a variation of from 6 to 18 thousandths of an inch between inside and outside is incorrect. Please tell us the correct measurements.

Right, before everyone gets a bit silly about this you have to remember that I am a printer, and that living in the UK I work in metric. Now having had the time to convert your inches to mm’s I can see that your template would work, and that you have allowed for the smaller page at the first fold. But you really don’t need to have between 0.2mm to 0.4mm difference between the inner and outer spreads. (Those thousandths of an inch look huge to a metric man which is why I assumed the template was wrong). I would only change the measurements between the two spreads if I was working on a heavy stock, seems overly cautious/complicated for your average work (on 90-250gsm) especially when you take into account the cracking that occurs on heavy stock.
I’ve attached a PDF template of what I would use which would work perfectly just like kools, but looks alot neater. Perhaps I’m just really anal when it comes to measurements.
from my experience it is set up wrong, Kirby template do work also, this one could to, but in myexperience it is wrong,
After you fold your trifold depends on the person but you want the cover to have a little bit of an over hang 1/16 or so to have it open easy,
but i have not stated several times about anything, just from my experience with trifold it wouldnt work on the projects i have done

Also once the leaflet is trimmed, prior to folding, you've lost all your fold marks anyway and are totally in the hands of the finisher. Some add a lip, some don't. Hey-ho.
