Hello everyone! Just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Brandon Palmer and I am currently a freshmanat ISU for GD. You will most likely hear a lot from me in the coming years.
I am sure some of you have heard of Steven Heller, the author of many graphic design books.I bought one by him about a week ago and was very dissapointed. "Graphic Design History" really has nothing to do with the history of GD, it is fourty essays on famous people from the past. "What's wrong with that? You should have read the back of the book idiot!" I did, and skimmed through the first chapter, which is a rough outline of the beginnings of GD. So I assumed the rest would be in some chronological order and would tell me the history of graphic design through individual histories. No. The section on Henry wolf is just an interview and a brief story of his life. In fact, the book requires a great deal of knowledge on GD, and, what gets me, it's history. I was expecting something that would teach me about how GD came to be. I was very dissapointed, and probably won't be able to fully appreciate the book until I take art theory and history.
I went browsing online at his other books and he does this misleading title thing alot. There are several other books that seem like tutorials or advice into realms such as theory and GD in general, but in essence they are just short articles on select peices. I was not the only one that was upset, many other reviewers of the book were mislead as well.
Anyways, I will let you all go, just htought I would share that, and open up this thread to others who know of good GD books.
