I know there's 2.834 points in 1 mm (or 2.83464567 if you want to be a perfectionist) but I can't be of any help to you on the InDesign question, sorry.

Yeah. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO USE!!! (Grrr!!!)
Sorry. You were saying? Well, if go to preferences (Cmnd-K) you can change your prefs to mm and that's what will appear in all the dboxes... OR.... if you don't want to go to that trouble, just type in your number, followed by 'mm' and it will automatically convert that to whatever unit your document is set to. You can also use 'in' for inches, 'p' for picas, 'cm' for centimeters... um.. I dunno... 'ss' for shoe size? Anyhow, it's a handy feature. (You also use *, /, +, - as mathematical operands on all numerical input boxes-- also very handy.)
Diehard anti-metric designer here. Watch out for flying pica rulers....

If you use a mac, the faster way is : command + R, if you don't already have the ruler bar...
after, just press control and click on the top ruler bar... you can change your unit!
On pc it should be right click on the ruler bar i supposed...
Hope that help you
Sorry about my english

As you say, a single right mouse button on the PC ruler will also get you to the unit drop down list. But getting back to the original posted question, I think that scripts by default are nailed to points as it's the 'internal' default unit of all things postscript.
