The purpose of World Turtle Day, May 23, sponsored yearly since 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.[1][2][3]

Turtle Day is celebrated worldwide in a variety of ways, from dressing up as turtles to saving turtles caught on highways, to research activities.

So everyone kiss a turtle today!

Er... turtles harbour a lot of nasty invisibles-- including salmonella.

My advice is to make it an air-kiss. If it's a snapper, a very respectfully distant air-kiss.

I love turtles... but I don't want to kiss one.

Also, I would recommend that you do not try to hide someone's pet turtle behind your back. Turtles can dart their necks out very quickly and bite a person in the side with quite a surprising amount of force, breaking the skin and requiring a tetanus shot.

As Broacher suggests, it is probably best to enjoy your turtles from a distance.

Reminds me of my ex inlaws iguana ... he loved to give me kisses ... I always washed my face well after :D

But I will blow kisses to any turtle I happen to see today :p

I love turtles! I had a pet one for about a week. Very irresponsible of my auntie, she bought me and my sister 1 each while we were in Hong Kong. Of course we couldn't bring them back to New Zealand with us so we had to give them away after a week.

Spuggie better hide today.
