Let me have it! I can take it!
Project: Energy drink cans for PepBoys
Manufacturer: Havoc
Theme: Disrupt the ordinary.
This is the one that matches their request. (although I don't know how a plain black disrupts the ordinary)

And this is my take that will be presented (unless you all hate it) as an option

I just realized after posting this that the second idea is missing the tag line.
Drinks cand work well with diagnal type not horizontal.

sort of a side question here but related to the post..
Is there a way to UV wrap the design around a 3d model of the cylinder (can)?.. I think PS cs4 extended does this but not Illy or indy? or maybee just a smart object would work? Point being, it should would help out for visualizing.

Take your graphic in Illustrator, then do:
Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Warp...
Then choose "Arch" and play with the numbers until you get the proper amount of curvature.

I think the flames need more meaning, it seems a bit "random" try the flames coming from the bottom crawling up the can.

check out Illustrator help and look up "Mapping a 3D object". You might want to try Image mapping. But be warned, it is the most cumbersome non-intuitive gui Illy has and if you don't get it quite right, will produce stitches in your image. But it's fun to play with.

The second one's too over the top, it feels like that parody energy drink on youtube. I'd tone it down a bit. The first one looks like engine oil or some kind of aerosol product. I wouldn't drink either, but then again, I'm not into energy drinks so I'm probably not in your target demographic.

The first thing I saw were pepsi colours.
I prefer the plain black background.
Flames seem a bit childish - illustrated flames, like the one's on cars might work.

Engine oil would work. Pepboys is kinda like Jiffy Lube.
Is this a contest?
I like the first one way better than the others. The first one is nice and simple. Plus...considering Pep Boys is a car place, the matte black can color is pretty trendy...maybe play with some simple 'vintage hot rod-esque' pinstriping to set it off a bit.
However...you mispelled CAFFEINE. ;)

Ynot,
Thanks for the catch
PrintDriver,
No, this is not a contest. Pep boys is an existing client. Havoc came to us with the custom energy drinks to offer all our clients. When sales meets with Pep boys for another project they are also presenting this.

pepboys is also big into racing (nascar, indy, and rally) and custom hot rods. And since you are "printing" on a can, perhaps use the silver to your advantage for chrome-like bling.
