For something that specific, and with that kind of incentive ... you really need to be sitting down with your client(s) and discuss with them, a whole range of things - from intended marketing image, focus group ... to a whole plethera of such details fundamental to making a website (or business) work.

Only then, can you be in a position to propose adoptive concepts ... at the end of the day, the client always knows their business better than you. You need to be able to turn that knowledge into a checklist of sorts. After this stage, you can then share your knowledge and experience to tick ideas of the list, due to technical limitations etc ... afterall, this is why they're wanting you to make a website for them. You need to think of your client as part of the team, and always be bouncing ideas from each other.

That said, this is only my own opinion.

The short of what I'm saying is, we can't help you clear a concept, if you haven't even attempted to outline one. It would be like trying to write a legally bounding contract between yourself and your client, without knowing your legal standing, and without having an incling of what kind of terms and conditions are appropriate for yourself.

My advice is, don't be looking at other sites at this stage. You need to 'walk before you run' as they say. When you've got some concepts, then come back, and we can help clear your concepts and think of what kind of sites would be of use to you. As you stand, I don't see what we (at least I) can do for you at this stage.

I hope I've not been to dis-heartening.
