<hosting talk>

Ok first server-aventurehost..

they were down alot! I mean alot! on avg. more than 15/hrs/wk now imagine being a reseller for that... what do you explain to your clients... tryst me,, i wouldnt trust them with any site unless it was downtimecentral.com or something.

they were on overloaded, badly configured DELLS with CELERON processors which is the most deadly server configuration iamginable. overheat city!!!

then they come along and move me to an even worse serever with mroe downtime.... ewww (by then im going crazy since i lost 3 possible cleints eho found hosting elsewhere....

next I find e3 servers cine Ive had enough of aventures crap....

they were good at first... then teh server started to C...a...w....l......!! it was hell! cpanel was a drag to use since the server was slow I hated going into it!!!

next.... downtime...... HEVY but not as bad as aventure... but not tolerable for cleints.... also they were on DELLS (of all dang choices for servers!!)

so I wanted to do things differently... I wanted to offer both windows and linux hosting... found out abotu vortec out of FLORIA HURRICANE alley. (they told datacentert was in texas was BS) and that was hostign HELL with H-sphere... havting to read docs to create an account was absulutely insane!!! you had manually even associate yourself with a service domain and it was agony... manually creating all dns zones and also the pain of it being slow and also the navagation was clunky and confusing.

and it often wouldnt release a domain and was agnony getitng it to release and renew!! aarrrg!!!

and dns would often get confused and point to wrong acct on server!! and it was a mess and dns hell

it often would compalin about stuff that wasnt there... and it was agony getitng it to recongzie any settings. and addins on the panel dotn work right.

installing phpbb was giving me errors that I fixed 10 times and i decided to go manual which stuill didnt work so i said hell with it.....

hell with vortech im with savvis and it rocks!!! Wink

Hosting stories
is it something like ghost stories?
There is a better server around every corner, you are never stuck with just one.

I myself like small hosting companies, your mom and pops of the bunch.
When I first started out I found a host called 2fords.net
They were very helpful and I could call anytime and ask for help.
They were on a mac format.
I have done site work for clients who had yahoo hosting and found it quite difficult to use, of course that was a few years ago, maybe they have gotten better.
I own 1/2 of a server right now and I like that better.
I don't know much about it, but I don't have any problems and I get cheap hosting! LOL

[I]"BAN!"

Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists.... When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence.

I host my own now. Too many horror stories with ISP's :

1) They let their servers go down and don't fix them for weeks
2) They reinstall IIS and forget or refuse to reinstall Perl
3) Simply quit doing website hosting altogether without telling anyone
4) They switch from Win Servers to Linux so ALL the frontpage clients I had no longer worked or could possibly work
5) They change IP addresses and never tell you
6) They have problems paying their bills so service is sntermittent with their ability to pay THEIR provider
7) They offer great service but then don't know anything about servers or I.T.
8) They are anal retentive about security so you can't do any backend scripting.
9) They run a Mac server. (?????)
10) They string you along then you find out they don't actually have a server.. their a reseller for someone in Singapore.

Get a fixed IP address from whoever supplies your broadband connection and you can set up your own server.
You can even used DYNDNS.ORG to point to your domain(s) to your dynamic IP if you can't get a fixed IP.

For a server, it depends if you want to host 1 or more web site or do mail, ftp or DNS.

If you just want to host 1 web site you probably have a perfectly capable server sitting in front of you without getting any software at all or even changing your machine. If you want to run 2 or more you'll have to get some software.

Windows (Any version after 95) comes with Personal Web server or Internet Information Services. Why not use them?
