I've recently been put in charge of selling banner advertising on my company's Web site. I had previously been designing all of our banners, but mostly for self-promotion and value-added purposes. Now, we will also be selling ad space as a new thing. Our Web site gets about 106,000 page views (not hits) monthly. We have two sizes of banners: 175 x 110 px, and 468 x 60 px. It generally takes me about 25-40 min. or so design an ad, based on detail and animation, etc. How do I go about coming up with a reasonable price to charge for production? I'm going to do some research on my own, but I just wanted to see what you all thought.

pricing all depends on who your customer base is and what they can afford. some smaller firms charge $49.95 per banner, other more prominent firms can charge $1000 or more per banner. about a year ago i developed a banner campaign (5 banners) for $500. you have to figure out where you and your customers fit in. also, how will you be handling the ad-serving to monitor views, clicks and ad-rotation?

for web type ads we generally charge 60.00 per hour, one hour minimum.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Our web hosting company provides us with a banner ad monitoring system that allows us set limits on the number of views and clicks, and also allows us to setup groups that determine ad rotation and placement. i'm just going to go with a $40 flat rate for production. We don't do very anticipate doing much business on banner ads, and i don't want to alienate what small clientele we may attract. Thanks, again!

No, I moved back to South Florida from Gainesville in July. I miss it, though. I worked at the Gator Times when it was still around, and did an internship with Florida's Finest (the swimsuit calendar company). Do you happen to know Geoff Eisler? I'm pretty sure he was/is working at the Gainesville Sun. We probably know some of the same people. What college are you in?

I am going to SFCC and doing the graphic design program....I was going to go to UF but my buddy (matt kiziah) grad. in the multimedia and told me to go to SFCC....I also interviewed at some local agencies (352 media and adbiz for an intership) before in rolling in SFCC and they all said for me to go to SFCC also. I have enjoyed this program alot. The gainesville sun is sending me to some actionscript classes at new horizons which are taught by some UF professor and I plan on taking an SQL class, HTML level 4, ASP level 1 and 2 also at new horizons all this before graduating in June.

You miss this hell hole? are you kinding? I hate this place.....Geoff Eisler....hmmmm nope...I would recognize him most likely....

When I graduated, I was so ready to leave Gainesville. Being that it's a small town, you see the same people over and over again, and you pretty much see everything there is to see in town. But I totally miss the 'college town' atmosphere, I miss being able to walk around town and find parties on any day of the week, I miss Gator Beverage, I miss my old house (behind the Mellow Mushroom on SW 12 St. and 2nd Ave), and I miss my friends that still live there. It's a fun town, but I guess you have to leave and live somewhere else to really appreciate what Gainesville has to offer.

Sorry guys, i know this is off topic but i noticed that you (Delete Yourself/Big Perm) are both from the florida area....I myself go to school at FSU currently and live in south florida. Im very green in terms of Graphic Desighn and have been wondering what kind of market there was in south florida? Obviously its a growing area...but can someone with a major in Graphic Desighn flourish? Thats a bit stupid sounding, and obviously you could, i just get scared when i hear New York is where the jobs are....or maybe im way off? Please enlighten me :)

First of all, welcome to the GDF, stick around and check out the resources. This is a great place to learn! And to answer your question, I think that there is graphic design work pretty much everywhere. (Some places, more than others, obviously.) But there will always be a need for graphics services. As far as South Florida goes, the market is somewhat saturated with designers, which makes the competition for jobs pretty high, but if you get out there and meet people, it makes it a little easier. You should consider joining a professional organization, such as AIGA (http://www.aiga.org/) or AdFed (http://www.aaf.org/). Groups like that are great for networking. When I started looking for a job almost a year ago after I graduated from UF, the biggest thing I learned was that people usually hire based on who you know, rather than what you know.

So, keep practicing, keep meeting people, and you'll do fine!
