SO I get this call for a designer from Gordon College, they want 5 years experience. . .(if anyone wants contact info let me know I'll forward it to you) In anycase here I am little old me. . .A stretch if I say I have 1 yr experience, including my freelance, BUT I want to make an appeal to them to hire me on as an additional. . .Junior Designer. I have the contact info, I know they need talent, I would love to do work for them, (Thenetwork would be EXTREMELY good for me) since CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts) is based out of Gordon College. I also would love a job in academia and I know people up there, so I need an opinion. How should I go about this, should I ask for an informational interview (as suggested in Savvy Designer book) or should I prepare a full cover letter to make an appeal to them to hire me.

IMO: i would go for the full deal. not like i know wtf im doing but if they like your work experience shouldnt matter.
this is a good question, Im going to ask my one teacher on thursday who has been teaching us about applying for jobs. (if i remember)
i applyed for a job over the summer which required a BA, they told me not to worry since i do not have one that they just wanted to make sure people knew the programs, and thats why they required such a high degree. i screwed up the interview tho.. lol forgot to take my tounge ring out, and never followed up because i found out a friend of mine who worked there was throwing away resume's and such to get me hired. So i didnt send a thank you or whatever. I decieded it wouldnt be a good place to start a career.

you know, Drorain, my career counselor told us that an employer lists the qualifications of their 'ideal' employee in the employment ad, but doesn't really expect to find that person. I have been told that if you possess even 75% off the required skills it is worthwhile to apply for the job. If I were you, I would go for it! The worst thing they can say is 'no'.
hope this helps!

also, have you any more experience in a *related* field? If so, play that up!

Oh yeah AND i forgot about this..
when i was 19 i applyed for a secretary position that i was underqualified for. They called me in, gave me an interview and hired me on the spot for a reception position. I was the only one they called in for that Position. Guess they liked my umph. :D
So you never know what another oppurtunity could lead too!

go for it head on... you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Career counsellors know crap when t comes to this industry..all rules do not apply. there are no rules.

The experience requirement is not meant to find someone who merely knows the programs. You cannot substitute experience in this field because what they teach you in school, as we all know, is not adequate preparation. The reason many jobs require experience is because they don't want to be the ones who chew people up and spit them out, they want people who have passed the 'trial by fire' stage of this career. You must not only know the software and the platforms, you must be able to work quickly and efficiently. You must also be able to interact with people who didn't go to school and don't understand why they're paying you for 2 colors when you're only using one tiny red dot.
Still, I say go for it. All they can do is say no, right?

At least try to get an interview, that in itself is worth a lot in terms of learning.
