okie dokie, I've got a new project for my design class. this is project requires us to design and produce an18 page booklet with the pages being 8.5x11. this is a fictional bank's annual report. i've set this kind of thing up before in quark but I'm moving to indesign now so I can pdf the b1tch when it's done. anyway, do you all have in tutorials or tricks or methods to help me accomplish this fluidly? when i finish, i want to take it to kinkos and have them print it out from pdf. what are facing pages and coalating and how do they help this process! thanks so much in advance...

Facing pages referrs to your document setup. If you use single pages, your document will, of course, be in single pages; facing pages will be in spreads, or 2 8.5 X11 pages side by side, with a single page as page one and 2-3 will be the second spread, etc...
When you're done with your book (which will have 20 pages, not 18 because it must be divisible by 4), you can tell InDesign to make a booklet, and PDF the booklet.
