Yes, you turned off Overprint in the preferences (not recommend by the way).

The preferred method is - don't mess with the Black swatch (or any swatch) with square brackets around it in indesing, like [Black] and [registration] they're there for a reason and non-editable for a reason.

Make a new swatch called Knockout Black make it 100%K And this should already knockout anything.

The way you get this to overprint is to select Overprint Fill in the Attributes Panel but it should already be knocking out.

You didn't mention what you're printing it on, but a lot of times the printer/RIP has a setting to overprint black that will override your InDesign settings. You might check there too.

hey thanks for the replies

i am using a copy of the black swatch and it's still overprinting..
i'm printing with a konica minolta c6500 and i've never experienced this problem before that wasn't easily corrected..
i tried printing with 'let indesign determine colours' selected instead of postscript printer and it's still not working..

i know i could just put the text into the pdf with illustrator but i'd really rather get to the bottom of this!

You should have an option in your print settings for "black overprint" and "PS overprint". Did you check to see if black overprint is unchecked? (it's checked by default)

is that in the indesign print dialogue? cause i can't find it.. in the printer's dialogue i have composite overprint and auto trapping turned off and that's all that seems remotely relevant ...

I was referring to the printer's dialogue, but I guess the specifics would depend on which controller you are using. Do you know which one? (Creo, Fiery, neither?)

Was just typing out the answer and you found it! lol... I've forgotten that setting on more than one occasion.

Its funny, because in my workflow there must be at least half a dozen areas to "double check" to make sure black isn't set to overprint. There are a few jobs where I can check the original InDesign files, the PDFs, the RIP Software and still can't figure out WHY the black is overprinting.

Then, I generate a PDF from InDesign (making sure the black is NOT set to overprint), open the PDF in Illustrator, and BOOM the attributes panel shows me that object is set to overprint again..... wtf!

I simply un-check it within illustrator, re-save the PDF and push it through the workflow without any of the problems. Its crazy, but it works.

Luckily I only run into it a few times a year. Since it always comes from the same design firm, I always assume it is something one of their designers or on staff free-lancers was doing during initial set up of the job.
