when it comes to this questions i always feel bad for asking them...
but here it goes, im playing with making shapes in illustraotr and cannot for the life of me figure out how these are made...
on this logo i want to create the wavy portion of the logo... does anyone have any ideas?
or do you all think it is hand sketched, but im sure there is something i can do in illy to replicate this effect.

and on this one how are the triangles made? i tried copying one and replicating it but no luck... i also know that with the triangle tool i can add more points creating a star pattern
is this somehow used?

or am i just being very stupid today...its a monday and i have been up since 5:30 this morning...
thanx...

OK, this may come in several bursts, so check back.
Go to WINDOW > BRUSHES and open the brushes panel. In the lower left corner of that panel click the Brush Libraries Menu button, and choose BANNERS AND SEALS. Pick several of those brushes, and use them on a blank document. Click the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow), and click around to see how they are constructed.
Then use the pen tool to create your own. You'll be happier with the result.

The wavy line border in the top logo: Start by drawing a circle with the ellipse tool. Put horizontal and vertical rules through the center of the circle...they'll line up with the circle's four points.
Figure out how many waves you want, double that number (you should end up with an even number for the sum or this won't work), and divide into 360.
EDIT: In the example, there are 12 peaks and 12 valleys, so 360° ÷ 24 = 15° between each peak and valley, and 30° between each peak.
With the circle selected, double click the rotate tool, and in the dialog box enter the number of degrees in the result of your division, and click OK. The circle will rotate, then use the ADD POINT tool to add four new points where the guides bisect the circle. Continue until rotating brings points back to the guides.
(Hang with me, we're getting there)
Draw a second circle concentric to the first (larger or smaller, doesn't matter, but the distance between them will be the distance from the peak to the valley of the waves). Make that second circle into a guide.
Using the same rotating method as above, work your way around again, dragging every other point in the circle to the guide circle, with the shift key held down to keep it in place.
If the waves aren't as smooth as you'd like, use the convert anchor point tool to drag out the anchor points. To do this precisely, add a vertical guide to the right of the circle's center, and a horizontal guide below the circle's center, the same distance. Work your way around the circle with the Rotate tool the same way, using the Convert Anchor Point Tool each rotation to drag anchor points out to the second guide.

In both examples, the outer rules around, both color and white, can be added with additional appearance instances in the Appearance panel.

For the sawtooth circle in the second one, select the Star tool, and click on the page where you want the center to be. In the dialog box, enter the two radii (this will take some guesswork) and the number of points. (I made one with 200 points no problem.)

I would draw a circle. Then go to Effects > Distort & Transform > ZigZag.

ROFLMAO!
Thanks, Salsa, you just taught me a tool I've never used before.

:) I saw your post after I wrote mine and thought "I wonder if I misunderstood the question?".

Me too, biosensor (obviously... ;) )
No, salsa, your solution is much quicker and works like a charm. I started using Illy with version 3, before a lot of those effects were available. I need to do some tutorials and catch up!
At least the multiple appearances advice is still sound! :D

You learn something new every day. I've never used the zigzag effect before. Thanks Salsa.

Aw, you're welcome guys. I'm all too familiar with the zig zag effect since my employer rates the starburst as the best shape ever. If you need advice for a bright shade of red or yellow, I can help you out there too.

You can also use the Star Tool.
1. Click on the Star Tool
2. Single click on your artboard
3. Select the # of points that you want
4. Select your inner radius
5. Select your outer radius

Well, it was an epic post. ROFL
I could have done more with the type to make it clearer that there were several answers.

I read through your post garricks and thought "why not just use the zigzag tool?" :D

I'LL read Garricks post later I'm still in bed, first thing in the morning. Let me think.
I'd do the star tool and have loads of points. Then do rounded corners and adjust the corner radius.

LOL Clearly the better choice. Please remember, I'm a Linosaur (a designosaurus who started off on a Linotype machine). Some old techniques die hard until I discover a "new" tool like the Zigzag. :D
Today I'm headed over to Lynda.com to see what else I'm missing in Illy. :)

lol ... great thread!
I'd have gone into the attic, got my ol' iMac 17 out of the packaging, booted into an older OS and got Freehand on the go!
Never got to grips with Illy :o

thanx again for the help yesterday, i was completely thrashed yesterday.
I also was thinking about adjusting all the points one by one but knew there had to be a easier way to do the shapes.
funny how the simplest things make us go crazy. Cant believe this thread turned into a 3 pager.

Heh. I'm having my own issue today changing the ink in an Illy doc that has a bazillion gradients in it, none of which are named. I may post about it later...
