Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Database website (URGENT)
Hi all,
I have this upcoming project to design a site that has a database most likely access and was wondering how much i should charge. It will most likely be in asp since i have done more work in that than php. I need help cause i usually work on regular static site for freelance and the sites i have done using dynamic programming language are my full time job (makes it hard for me to convert).
The client wants something like this but with better graphics www.meiah.com (http://www.meiah.com)and he wants it done by mid jan. Tell me what you think!
thanks in advance

Don't know. But one (fairly obvious) answer is to consider how much time it's going to take you in relation to a static site, then price it proportionally. I know the market doesn't always work like that, but at least you won't be left doing too much work without getting enough for it.

That's pretty much what I was going to say... figure out how long it will take you and charge by the hour?
I haven't lost my mind... it's backed up on disk somewhere.

There is some extra work involved in building a database and alot depends on the size and research you will have to do on the products and how much information they are going to hand over. Will they supply the data base or will you build it along with the site. Always figure in some trouble time. you will most likely have to contact the server for database upload directories and you don't always get a quick response. Make sure the timeline is realistic, bid high. I am guessing this is for a shopping cart? Sounds like a large site and considering it's almost the holidays, I always quote my time from the first of the year, from here on out. So, in other words, you might get some photography from me during this holiday time, but no new sites until after the 3rd of the year. Is two weeks going to be enough time to set up the server, make graphics, design, layout, fix photo's, do a database, will you be doing it by yourself? How many products if it is a cart and how much time will you spend on each one? then of course you have the other pages to consider. Will you write the copy or will you just have to lay it out? It all adds up and it all takes time.

Here is the thing with dynamic coding... it takes a long time to write from scratch... but once you have the code built up in your portfolio is very easy to manipulate the coding from previous projects... it might only take me 10mins to do each and everypage if i just copy and paste from my other projects and modify it a bit (just the coding part) this is why is so difficult for me to quote by how long it will take for me to work on it. As well, i had this impression that dynamic websites generally cost morebecause it requires programming skills.. meaning the rate per hour actually jump up quite a bit. Creating this site will take a lot of time on building the database which the client said he will do... i will have to keep telling him that this is the most important part of the project so that he won't slow me down. I dont' think the entire site will take long to buildbut i think the client's target deadline is also quite short period of time. So do i also have to consider rush job? Please tell me what you think..

Is this a cart? Don't cut yourself short, just because its easy for you doesn't mean it isn't worth the value of the one you did before even if you are just cut n pasting something you have done before and changing a few things, i understand how you feel, thou. Set a standard. Earn yourself a living! /emoticons/biggrin.gif

no it won't be a cart yet... he said that would be for the future.. he basically wants an advance search function for his products... what do you guys think is a fair fee for someone who has about 2-3 years experience?
