My team at work needs a solution for storing and managing our stock photo collection. We have a few thousand stock photos, PDFs, swfs, audio files and videos.

Bridge is an option (as we're using version cue for our design projects) however the down side is that it cannot be installed outside of the creative suite and the digital assets need to be accessible by team members outside of the design team for various reasons. We're not really happy about having to purchase an adobe product that will go unused just to gain access to Bridge but Adobe has told me there are no plans to sell bridge as a standalone.

Are there any other solutions out there for a small team, of about 10 people in a mixed platform environment? We prefer a desktop client solution just because the speed and feature sets tend to be more robust.

We use Extensis Portfolio for our photo archives. We did an extensive review of products and Portfolio met our needs the best. :)

I did come across that, and it looks interesting.

Are you using the Portfolio Server? or the Standalone app they sell for $200? Does the standalone app allow us to have a single repository that we can all view and add to?

We use Portfolio Server now, but we used to use the standalone app with desktop clients. You can work around not using the server version but the server works way smoother. ;)

What's their pricing like for the server version? I notice they want people to contact them for pricing... which sounds to me like it's going to be a budget busting number.

It's $$$$ for sure. I don't know how much. But it's been totally worth it for the ability to allow our clients to do image searches while NOT allowing them to download/use the images.
