I usually charge by the hour for my website design work (sometimes fixed cost projects). Now I have to start doing some of my own photography to use in a site. So I'm charging by the hour for the time I spend taking the pictures. I'm thinking of treating the resulting photos as property of the client in terms of copyright, or at least giving them non-exclusive future rights. I don't want to milk the client as they are good customers, but I also want to make sure I'm not being stupid about this - does this sound like a reasonable arrangement? I'm charging the same as I do for my other graphic design work per hour.

I charge photography by the hour. They get exclusive use rights, as they are purchasing the photos. my2cents.

I pay hourly rate, but more often it's 1/2 day rate or full day rate plus film charges - usually.
Film. Remember that stuff?
The chromes are mine (or rather, my client's) if I buy em that way - with a contract involved.

If I want to buy an existing photo I pay usage. Usage fees depend on how many times I use it and how many people will see it. I've had to pay thru the nose for TV images but not near so much for small museum exhibit images - even though museums images will be up longer. Never had to outright buy the exclusive copyright on anything yet but I'm sure the day will come.

For a hint at what I pay, sign into Corbis and do a few prices on their Rights Managed stuff. Corbis is high-end expensive though.

I know one photographer who went out and took about 300 photos of a science laboratory, did in a day, charged about $3000 for the deal. (the photos were ok, nothing spectacular). then allowed the client to choose which photos they wanted to use - about $20 per photo for low res and about $40 for hi res.

that system seems weird to me, but the client was ok with it.

Just figured it would help to hear how another photographer does it.

OK thanks. I'm thinking I will just charge the hourly rate but maybe keep the right to use the photos again myself in future.

I generally charge a flat fee for an on-site shoot, dependent on the time bracketed (2 hours vs. a full day, etc.).

Then I allow them to select the photos they'd like to use from a contact sheet, and charge an hourly fee for post-production on those photos - color correction and other various touch-ups.
