hi everyone, i havent posted here forever, (since before x-mas)
anyways, i just got a question.

I just had graphic design class today, and i was talking about how i like to use illustrator because vector graphics are much easier to resize w/o quality and stuff (duh!) lol
anyways my GD teacher said that later on when we use Quark, that i will find it a lot more usefull.
I have used a lot of photoshop, and am kinda begging at Illustrator and i am fairly comfortable using both programs. but i was wondering. Is Quark express better that illustrator for vector graphics ( i thought it was more of a DTP program that isnt used much for sinlge logo designs and one pagers.) am i right???
Is it neccesary for me to lean Quark or would i be better off using InDesign, since i am comfortable w/ Adobe products???
How much different is Quark from Adobe????
Any info you can give me will be great, i might just start learning Quark anyways, cause i will probably be using it someday.
thanks
LIAM

Liam your topic has an unfortunate title. I almost didn't read it cuz I am personally tired of the QvsInD debate.

but that isn't what you are asking...

Illustrator is a vector drawing Program. Quark most definitely is NOT. While you can and occasionally do draw shapes in Quark, you want to be using Illy to create stuf that Quark can't handle then import it in. Quark is a decent tool for doing layout but not for drawing OR DOING PHOTO EDITING (note Q6.5 has tools. I Hate em).

As for learning either Q or InD, learn both. Specialization is for insects. In reality I prefer InD because it does do some things I use it for a lot better than Quark can (or Quark can't do at all). Other people find the opposite to be true. And the interface for InD is very close to Illustrator's so the learning curve was far less steep than I thought it would be.

What PD said.

Just to update on the whole QXD vs. ID thing, though...my company is making the swtich to ID. We have been loyal Quark users since the beginning, but now we're giving QXP the finger (the middle). Helloooooo, InDesign.

Oh yeah, you can also use Illustrator as a layout program. But not for multi-page documents like catalogs and brochures. Quark has size constraints the Illy and InD don't have (both artboard and image). Being large format, I hate working in scale in Quark and designers always bone output percentage and image resolutions using it for large format at least the first few times they do it.
