I use Quark 6.1 on OSX with Suitcase Auto Activation on. The problem is some fonts don't appear or don't appear correctly. Zapf Dingbats is a good example -- when I open my files Quark can't find Zapf Dingbats until I search manually and replace Dingbats with itself. Apparently switching from postscript Dingbats to True Type Dingbats (dfont) is a solution to some extent.

Another problem is Quark selects different font variations (Helvetica Neue, Helvetica LT Std) every time it opens my files -- reflowing my text.

Why are these things happening with Quark? I don't have these problems with InDesign.

I've had the same substitution problem in OSX with InD and Illustrator, especially with the Times font. If you still have fonts strewn about your hard drive in any of the 5 or 6 locations OSX reads, there is a preference order it reads them in.
Home>library>fonts
Library>fonts
Library>Application support>(application)>fonts
Network>Library>fonts (if you use one)
System>Library>fonts
Classic Fonts located in OS9 system folder
I don't know why it would change every time you open your file. My probs happen when changing comps.

As for Suitcase Auto Activation, I don't use Suitcase and don't like auto activation, but saw a few interesting things over at the Quark forum on a quick search of 'suitcase auto activation'. Maybe something there will help you if someone doesn't come along shortly. Like D-Zine. She's a Quark Queen as well as a PDF goddess.

we are using quark .... whatever the newest version is on OSX at my school.... and so far all we have been taught is to use screen fonts or printerfonts.... and everytime we use a font we are supposed to load it from our server.... so i dunno if that little bit helps or not... but yeah...

ALSO... if anyone has any useful tips for quark.... PLEASE let me know

Screen fonts and Printer fonts are the two parts of a Postscript font. They do separate things. Without the printer font portion of a postscript font, the file cannot be printed correctly. Without the screen font portion, it cannot be viewed correctly on your monitor.

Sorry to hijack the thread for a moment.
