if you haven't already, read THIS (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/default.aspx?f=8&m=87096) thread.
Your school also might be able to recommend places that you could get an internship. Check with your local printing companies about getting some prepress experience... that is VERY handy, even if you are planning to be strictly a designer... prepress knowledge can make a big difference.

Welcome to the forum! /emoticons/cheers.gif Good luck!

take anything you can get for any sort of money, even if you have to work for free.

I'm not kidding.

I second both Joe and Morea's advice.

Working in a print shop while in school would be great for you. Also some schools have them and let students work in the prepress area....we had a digital one at my college. The students ran the prepress department but students were also allowed to print their own jobs.

Get an internship! I did when I was at school and the knowledge I learned compared to my classmates was invaluable. I was steps ahead of many of the other students plus the teachers respected that alot. They may even help place you if you ask them.

You don't know what you don't know.

Do you have advisors at your school that are in the business. I know all the schools around here have advisors that are art directors from design firms around the state. They come by school atleast once a month, we usually see one at least every week, check out the students work, give speeches, etc. Thats how i got my internship, they liked my work called me up at school one day and offered me the job. (paid internship to was lucky on that one).

If not search your AIGA chapter they usually have internships posted on there, get in touch with design firms in your area, and stay in touch for a possible opening.

You could also volunteer to do some design work for some non-profit organizations that you believe in. The experience is more than worth the time you would put in!

I don't know where you're at, but you might want to have a look to see if your government has any kind of youth employment strategies or work experience programs. Could be good experience and you can always pump up a government job on your resume and leave out the internship part.
