Help us out here.
What version of the operating system?
Did you just do the 10.3.7 update?
Does AI CS not open at all? Or does it stall during startup?
Does it stall in a certain place?
Do you have a font utility cuz my first guess is you have a corrupted font.
Second guesses come later.

Mac.OS X version 10.3.7. AI Version 8.0 (CS) yes I did the 10.3.7 update than re-start the pbg4 and still nothing. No, it does not open at all. It looks like it's going to but it does not. When I click on the icon it will automatically start reading the file (like it normally does) but then all of a sudden it will just quit and a dialog box will appear stating something like 'adobe illustrator cs has unexpectedly quit. the system and other applications have not been affected. Would you like to sumbit a bug report to Apple? No, I don't have a font utility.

Ok wait.
Are you just doubleclicking on an illy file to open the progam?
Is the file you are trying to open on a Network server? If so, try copying it to your desktop and open it from inside Illustrator (file>open) instead of double clicking the file icon.
Do other files open?
Does the program itself open either from an alias in your dock or directly from it's folder on the hard drive?
If you still get the error message when opening the program directly, I still suspect a font.
Just a note that 10.3.7 has been wreaking havoc on some users, but only some. Messing up everything from dock settings to internet access to firewire to slow startups. You repaired permissions before and after?
All your other programs work?
Try reloading but I don't think that's the prob.
Have you tried trashing the prefs?
Illy CS is version 11 btw.

I'm just clicking on the icon. I had try to open through an AI file but still nothing.
No, the file is not on a Network server.
It's opening directly from it's folder on the hard drive.
I did the repaired permissions before but not after, I dl the update.
Yes, all the other programs work.
How would I do the reloading and where would I find it?
I was thinking about trashing the prefs. But don't know where they will be located.

Thanks for your help.

Try repairing your permissions (you should always do that before and after loading software and updates)

Are you saying Illustator is opening when you click on it in the folder on your hard drive but not when clicking the icon on the dock? We seem to have a language gap. Sorry for misunderstanding you. It's tough sometimes in typing to get what I mean down right.

The preferences are located in Users>(your name)>Library>Preferences>Adobe Illustrator CS Settings. If you trash them the program will make a new set but you will lose any customization you may have created. I change a lot of my hotkeys so I keep a virgin copy stashed away and replace rather than trash.

To reload, you need your Illustrator CS disk.

AI CS is not opening on the dock nor on it's folder in the hard drive.
I found the preferences folder, do I just trash it then re-start the pbg4. And open up AI CS?
I have the Illustrator CS disk with me, to reload.

PD Thanks for your help. I trash the pref. then did a permissions. Then re-start the pbg4 open up AI CS and it worked!
Thank you so much for your help! /emoticons/biggrin.gif

One last ? though should I still do the reloading? Oh, should I also delete the update that I dl or just leave it alone?

Ignore D-Frag. Someone dropped him on his head as a baby. LOL.
;) JK D-F.

You probably don't need to reload.

I'm not sure what update you mean. I wasn't really aware there was an Illy CS update (haven't looked either lately).

I have had a similar problem with illustrator which I installed this week. It was quitting during the lauch sequence after initallising 70% of the font list. So I did what the smart dude said and now it does 100% of the fonts, but still fails to load and after a short wait, the unexpectedly quit message appears again. Im running a 1.5ghtz g4 with 512mb ram, all the other cs progs (which work fine) and v 10.3.7 osx. Dont have extensis or any other non stock fonts installed. HELP! /emoticons/violent.gif

I don't have anything to add to the answer, but on a side note, the last version of said program (Illustrator 10) was buggy as hell. I used Illustrator 8 back in college and the first period of my career, and it seemed solid. Then it was downhill from there. Fortunately, I do like Illustrator CS (11) and it seems like they fixed much with it. But there's always more to be done (puh-lease add a vectorization tool and a 'paint bucket' (like Photoshop's, not what's currently in Illustrator) for the next version.)

It isn't gonna fix itself so unless you have an IT guy coming around best thing is to do some surfing around to figure it out. With upgrade after upgrade coming out on the Mac OS, something is always breaking. I'm guessing this prob arose after the 10.3.7 update you did. If you aren't careful with your permissions things go bad right quick. If you crash a program with a doc open, fonts and prefs get screwed up. There is a lot to know about your tools of the trade and if you can't use your tools and don't know how to fix them be sure to get a nice-and-comfy at a large corporation that does have an IT dept.
Sorry for the vent.

Knowing the tools of the trade also means knowing your pens cos sometimes ur gonna need them when illustrator goes on holiday. Pens are the future anyway. Just for future ref, i need to repair permissions before and every time i install something? and no v.11 didnt work on 10.3.6. on this machine either. There is a lot to learn aye, but i had pc plaforms for 14 years and could fix them with my eyes shut. Ive had mac for three months, and CS for a week so bare with me.... sorry for the vent.

I'm the same way with PC's. Can fix Macs all day but can only hit the PC with a hammer and hope something jars loose.

Unk, I'm hearin ya on the pens...

right. have now archived and re installed to osx 10.3.4 which came with my pbg4 as from the other forums it appears 10.3.7 causes more 'random behavior' problems than it fixes... Trashed prefs.. nothing, then finally reinstalled illustrator and guess what. zip. only thing is the installer comes up with 'unexpectldy quit message', (but doesnt quit?) maybe the installer is knackered. any further ideas?

Try searching the Adobe Forums. I know I've seen an install quit thread there but can't seem to find it now. And I have work to do I been blowing off all weekend. The Apple forums have a couple of suggestion too, here and there, but nothing about installer quit. Most of it involves reloading OSX back down to 10.3.5 or trying Onyx (Freeware utility).

Ive tried achive and install to roll back to 10.3.4 and it made every thing behave really badly. PSD files wouldn't launch from the desktop and my copy of phase one corrupted. So ive put illustartor in the bin and had to reinstall combined update 10.3.7 and reinstall the adobe elements that work, and capture one. Im f--ked off with it and I never want to see it again. Ill manage with PS.
