how do you guys organize and name your files on your computers/servers?
i am trying to find a method of organization that allows me to archive files just as easy as it is to find them... and something that would allow our IT guy have a more efficiant way of use the tapes for backup. (right now he's having to back up 60gigs a day)

the IT at my work suggested that i make sections/folders on the server for 'active' files (what he would need to back up on tape everyday) and 'inactive' files (which would be for completed files/projects that have already been archived, monthly)

and he was also suggesting that i start naming every file like this: 'PRODUCT NAME (VERSION/COMP#) (COMPANY NAME) [DATE STARTED]'

anyone else have any recommendations reguarding this?
cause for me, this seem much different from my method. (which sums out to great and well organized sever, but crazy if not impossible to archive effectively)

I personally don't have a specific way to do this; however, I've been looking into how to get this going.

I did a little research and found an article on the AIGA Forums. You can view it here (http://designforum.aiga.org/content.cfm?ContentAlias=%5Fmessageview&mid=%24%2E %5EG%2D%5D%20%20%20%0A).

I'm sure different structures fit different people. As for myself, my root contains this: ClientName/TypeOfWorkIEWebOrPrint/Date

This allows me to visually seperate clients and projects very easily, so only the latter directories need backing up. All 'inactive' source material is either in the ClientName directory under a Resources folder, or on another drive which contains just Royalty-Free Photos and the like.
