hi everyone,
i am continueing development on my portfolio website, i designed the logo, and i am thinking of ideas for a page layout, i want it to have a pleasing feel to it, and to be original yet, practical.
tell me what you think so far,
the size isnt scale, i am still working on it in illustrator, i may use a bit of photoshop, in the next stage of development (when i prepare all the images for the site) and then i may make it dynamic using flash.
please give me a little feedback, bearing in mind it is WAY under development
thx ;)

Needs better contrast first off like, and some whitespace in there.

yeah, i'll work on the contrast. but i think this could be good if i spend a lil time on it :)
im going to use a lot of photoshop images once i am done w/ the vector graphics for the site
i am going to use one program @ a time, a little like this:

1. illustrator to: (vector graphics) and basic layout
then....
2. photoshop to: (photo's) and 'photo effect images' (over the top of the basic layout)
then....
3. flash to: build interesting and dynamic user interface, w/ dynamic txt boxes that load txt files and
interesting animation.
then....
4. dreamweaver to: finalize the page, use layout tables and make sure the site stays positioned well

that is my plans so far, i want to demonstrate skills on all of the abouve software.

so bearing in mind that i got all that work to come, what do you think of my 'IDEA' so far. and we have allready addressed the 'contrast' issue, that is an ongoing problem i have, but i will work on it, like fusion said, maybye using some white may help :)

keep the feedback comming in, i appreciate it and it helps a lot :)

there's not much to comment on, really, keep working and when you have something a little more finished to show you'll probably receive more feedback

okie... a couple random observations...

I think that your UBER logo has potential, but something about the 'E' is bothering me. I'd get rid of the middle 'divider' and just leave the ones at the top and bottom.

Which brings me to ask... why did you choose the name 'uber design'? Don't get me wrong... I'm not knocking it - just curious. I looked it up on dictionary.com and found no definition. I did eventually find this definition in the 'urban dictionary'

uber The ultimate, above all, the best, top, something that nothing is better than. Term with literal meaning of 'above' in German. Brought to the mainstream in the early 80's by hardcore American punk band, the Dead Kennedys when using the term in the anti-Californian government song 'California Uber Alles', which is a take off the German motto of 'Deustchland Uber Alles', which translates to 'Germany above all.' The term was picked up in their native California stomping grounds by the typical surfers and 'punks' and extended from there to many teenagers, the majority of which use the term online.

Think of the professional image you want to portray to your clients or potential employers. Think of the connotations of your site's name, too.

I agree that you need more contrast and white space in the design, but I like the initial concept of your layout. I definitely wouldn't center the text in the boxes... that makes it harder to read. (Yes, I know it's Latin! /emoticons/lol.gif)

You may also want to consider removing the horizontal blue lines and just leaving the vertical one. I get the impression that you're trying to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

It's a good start... I'd definitely like to see this as it develops. Keep at it!

hmmm, yeah. i dunno why i chose the name 'uber' (just a random name) i knew it meant above tho' i think maybye i should think of another name. :(((((((
this sux. I really want to make a good postfolio, but the name thing gets me, i have started at least 20 different portfolio ideas (as youve probably seen) i dunno how i am gonna manage in the real world of GD, if i have all of these kind of problems, i mean would i really be capable of the job??? i could see myself getting laid off for not being able to come up w/ a good name, and execute it well, ex/. (this name, and major contrast problems) i dunno about my creativity, it's not broad enough.
I study GD like crazy, and i look at a lot of other peoples work, but when it comes to my work, i can never get something, that i feel is ready and that other people like.
i think i gonna stop this project, for now. .....
thanks for the feedback guys, :(((((((((((((((((

hey, I'm definitely not trying to be discouraging. I've seen you make a lot of progress just from what you've posted on the boards.
And usually, the hardest person to design for is yourself!

yeah,i guess its just really difficult to design for myself, sorry about the negativeness, thats the first timei have ever been negative about my gd skills.

anyways, i wonder why it is that designing for myself is so difficult....

hmmmmmm.....

well, i'll keep at it, i think i am gonna come up w/ about 20 names , and design logos for each of them and then go from there.....

:)

thx for the feedback,

LIAM

think about what you love... who you are... try to incorporate some of your personality into your professional image.

i love:
cars,
video games,
graphic design,

I like "Evergreen's" image, w/ the car on his sig.. and stuff like that.
but i think i lack the skills req. to draw 3d graphics.
I have a lot more i need to learn, but one things for sure, i could easily spend hours studying graphic design and looking at other poeoples work. im fact i look at a lot of other peoples work in the "showcase"
your advice helps i lot, and i really appreciate it. i know there is tons of books out there that deal w/ creating a portfolio.
im just gonna have too flood myself w/ ideas (like i usually do) and do many designs then pick one that i like.
