Im sorry to ask such a stupid question but,

I imported an image into flash and I would like to modify it in flash, simply erasing some parts and coloring some other parts in. however anytime I try to write over it it fails and the image reverts back to the original state. I would be greatly thankful if anyone knew how to fix this problem.

Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you are attempting to edit a bitmap in Flash.

You can't, unless you use Trace Bitmap, which converts it into vector format. (This may create a file size larger than the original, by the way.)

You can resize and distort bitmaps in Flash, however I strongly recommend you don't, particularly resizing them - the quality goes down substantially.

I would highly suggest making it a habit to use macromedia fireworks often when it comes to editing your images for flash.

You can do this by selecting the corresponding framewith your graphic) on the timeline, then go to modify > conver to symbol.
Give it a name then go to modify > break apart.
Once the symbol is broken apart, it will look like a bunch of 'dots' on the graphic.
From there you can edit and erase certain areas as you wish. You can also draw over it and maintain the areas you like, and it will still be on one seperate file.

If you plan on editing the picture over a series of frames i.e., making it disapear slowly or something like that, the you don't have to convert it to a symbol before you break it apart.
Personally, I like to convert all of my graphics to a symbol since it makes things easier as far as organization goes.

But yeah, modify > break apart is what you want to do.
