Okay, say I've got an Illy file open and I place a Photoshop eps file with a clipping path into Illy. Now, I want to use that same clipping path (out of the PS file) and place it into illy to 'outline' the photo in white for placement on a black background.
I open PS, copy the clipping path, and paste it into illy behind the imported image, but when I paste the photo into illy and then paste the path, they don't come in exactly in the same place. I can 'eyeball' the location of the path, but is there a way for it to be 100% the same location as the clipping path on my original PS file?
Does my question make sense?
If this makes no sense, I'll try to pull together some images to explain it better.

You don't say what version of Illustrator you are using.
When you create your path in Photoshop are you saving the path then converting it to a clipping path? If you look at the paths palette the name of the path should be in outline.
Save as photohop eps
In Illustrator 10, if you place a photoshop eps with a clipping path it is automatically read and applied. At least on my rig. You can hand place it if you keep the crop box but remove the crops on the exported path file. After you relese the crop marks, group the crop box outline and the path, place over your image and use the align palette to register them together. Then ungroup and delete the crop box.
If that makes sense...

If you have a PDF or EPS placed in AI, and selected, if you go to the Links palette and select from the LBT (little black triangle at the top of the palette) 'Embed Image' then if there's a clipping path it will appear with all the points editable and separatable from the image (with the Clipping Path Release command).

I'm not a real big fan of embedded images.
Prefer to receive linked items for print. Helps if color correction is needed.
You can relink your image by making a copy without the clipping path and Replacing with the Link box checked. First you'll need to release the clipping mask on the first image under Object>Clipping Mask>Release then ungroup if necessary so you can reapply it to the new link.

I have one. How can I get the stoke to scale up or down. I click the scale button and shrink it 50% but the stroke stays a point? What's up with that?

That's just a preference setting. Preferences/General/Scale Strokes and Effects. Personally, I think they should make this an object level attribute, and NOT a document level attribute. It's a lot more flexible that way (like CorelDraw).
PD, embedded images don't bother me... much. That is, they're a lot easier to deal with now than they used to be. That is, now that I can have both Photoshop and AI open at the same time without fear of crashing! Then it's just cut and paste to edit. Of course, in CorelDraw I've been spoiled-- there it 's just a right mouse click to save the bitmap off, or a double click to launch it into an editor (whether or not it's link or embedded).
Hey, wasn't that a ride in this morning! Yikes.
