I just finished mashing together a 60 page technical manual in Quark. It's set up in spreads (I believe that Quark calls them facing pages) but it is setup in such a matter that when it is printed on 8.5x11 sheets it prints in the right order. We are going to print with this thing now and will be printing it tabloid sized. Is there a convenient way to get Quark to convert the page order so that it will print the spreads properly? Eg. page 1 and page 60 will be on the same spread as opposed to page 1 and page 2.

Right now all that I can come up with is printing out all the single sheets, making a mockup as a guide and then manually re-ordering each page one-by-one.

Thanks guys.

I thought page impositioning was done by a different program - I'm afraid I don't think Quark can do it, it certainly wouldn't allow you to shuffle the pages into that order unless you did it manually and made a section start for each page, but all sorts could go wrong - I am willing to stand back and learn if someone says that it can be done....

Or let your printer do it. Some prefer to do it themselves. Ask.

I think you're stuck doing it manually. If it's printing digitally they'll have to do it in the quark file...if it's going to press they'll just arrange the film as needed.

I wish there was something that could do it automatically...I get stuck doing this for a bunch of hockey programs we do around christmas. Once it's set up it's not so bad...but doing it from scratch is a pain.

Thanks guys.
Looks like it's one of those nose to the grind stones kind of solutions. All of the xtensions and plugins and such appear to be fairly costly, much to costly for a one time use justification.

Thanks again.

The way I deal with this situation is to output the original file to a PDF. Then I set up a template with X amount of 11 x 17 pages each with a pair of 8.5 x 11 picture boxes. Then I place the various PDF pages into the boxes in the proper layout. You still have to manually lay it out the first time but after that when you get another one with the same amount of pages you just name the new PDF the same name as the old one and hit update links. If you save as a template every time you have to make one of these you will eventually get one for every page count. /emoticons/cool.gif

Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?

Kool's idea is a good one. If I still had to do printer spreads, I would use his method for sure!

I always just wrote the order out and set it up the spreads the right way so that 60 and 1 were beside one another when I did the layout, that way if you write it out, you have that to refer back to so you don't get confused as to what page you are on when doing the layout, and then you don't have ot go back and manually move anything. Did that make any sense? It's in my head but kinda confusing when I type it...LOL!

Yeah, kind of like having a mock-up right?

ehhh yeah kinda but I don't do up the whole book or anything. I just write something like this on a piece of paper so I know whats next to what....

10 1
2 9
8 3
4 7
6 5

Then you know whats across from the other page. Also...you know you have the right pages together when your page numbers = 1 MORE than the number of pages in your document. Thats how I did it with spreads...but I don't have to do those anymore - YAY! lol

That's how I do it. A section start for each page. Then you can shuffle your pages in the document layout without the numbers changing. It's not that difficult when you understand the pattern.

Along the lines of Kools method, could you just save your quark file out as 8.5 x11 pages, reorder the pages in acrobat and then print them onto 11 x 17 sheets? I've gotten as far as organizing everything how I need it but am not sure how to out put individual letter sized sheets onto tabloid.
Thanks

You can use a plug-in for Quark called INpostion or similar.

Check it out: INposition (http://www.thepowerxchange.com/imposer_pro_1175_prd1.html)

Personnally, I set up 2-page spreads already in postion. Not really that hard. I set up a signature map and have it posted on the wall in front of me while I work.

There's a free solution if you have Mac OS X called 'Cocoa Booklet'. It'll take the PDF you create out of Quark and 'booklet'-ize it so that ot's in printer's spreads. Then, if you have a duplex printing tabloid size printer, it'll print in printer's spreads with no problems.
