Hi, all.

We are working in InDesign CS. I have a spankin' new G5 with OS 10.3.5, and the rest of the computers are G4 10.3.3 or something...

We have a shared (Windows) server we work from, and we are running into problems with InDesign image-linking.

We haven't figured out if the break happens when we quit the program, disconnect from the server, or restart, but a break occurs all the time that requires us to relink images continually in the same document. That is, we can open an InDesign file with 50 linked images in it and will get a message that the images cannot be found. So we spend a few minutes relinking, sometimes with the dialog going straight to the appropriate folder. The next day, we run into the same problem...

Clearly, relinking files all the time is highly inefficient. Anyone have ideas why this is happening? I'd like to know:

- Is this a design flaw of the application?
- Could this be caused by differences in operating systems if we all are accessing shared files (either the layout file or the image files)?
- Is this a conflict between our Mac platform and the Windows server?
- Are there character thresholds for file- and folder-naming that, once crossed, cause confusion for automatic linking?

FYI:

- This is not a matter of the linked files being altered. Assume there are no changes to those linked files, and that they aren't even opened at any point.
- Generally, multiple clients are NOT opening a shared layout file... it's usually one person doing all the work without anyone else accessing any of the files.
