are you trying to crop a geometric shape other than a rectangle? cuz you cant do that. even with the magic wand, you will always have a rectangular canvas now matter what shape you crop. if you wanna delete the white bg, then just select it and delete it. (background has to be transparent)

i dont know if that really answered your question, cuz im still unclear on what youre trying to do.

Images can only be 'cropped' in rectangles. If you mean how do you isolate or silouhette an image, you have to delete the background (if your layer is the background, you have to make a new layer from background to be able to do this - Layer > New > Layer from background). Then you can move that isolated image anywhere without a colored background.

If you want to import that isolated image into Quark or InDesign, etc...it gets more complicated. You have to use a clipping path or an alpha channel.

WHen you start a document select transparent instead of white background. Or you can just delete the white layer if you have it on a seperate layer.

Once your convert your bg layer to a new layer, select the bg (using the wand, lasso, marqui, etc) and simply delete it.

Dblclking on the word 'Background' will quickly convert it to a floating layer too.

To save a web grpahic with a transparent background, it must be either a .GIF or .PNG, and make sure that the transparency box is checked.

dont use the 'save as' to save a gif. you should be using 'save for web', then youll get a preview of what its supposed to look like

If you want it to look a bit cleaner on the edges, you can try adding a stroke which is the same colour as the background you want to put it on. There's probably a better way, but i don't know it. :D
