so after a couple frustrating attempts at trying to learn the mesh tool in Illy, I am finally starting to get the hang of it. Here's my apple. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/yeah.gif
what do you think?

not bad.
Another way I make highlights on stuff is using the blend tool. First I make a shape(A) outlining the whole highlight and set it to whatver color the highlight is going to be. Also set the opacity reall low, or even to 0 if necessary. Now copy/paste that shape(B), and scale it down and stick it inside Shape A. Keep the opacity set high. Now go up to OBJECT then BLEND then BLEND OPTIONS, and set it to specified steps. 30 steps seems to work for the stuff I've done. Then just selct both shapes, click on the Blend tool and select the point on one shape, then a point on the other shape.
Its how I did most of the highlights on this...http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/default.aspx?f=15&m=99705
Very nice. I like it.

Thanks for the comments. :)
Mike, I know about the blend tool. I've been using it for some time now, so I'm pretty good with it. I want to learn the mesh tool though, because its the one tool I've never learned to use. Also, with the blend tool, I dont know about others, but I can tell when a person has used it (not that thats a bad thing), but the mesh can produce more realistic 3d results.
i dunno, i have seen some really realistic illustrations w/ the blend tool. The blend tool has more controll. you could allways use a 3d drawing program (like maya3d, or blender, which is free) don't ask me about 3d graphics software because i have never touched it, lol
anyways , i am going to learn the blend tool before i learn the mesh tool. i think it depends on what the project is as to what tool to use. both blend and gradient mesh can achieve awesome 3d results. just have to play around, i have seen it done, and will hopefully learn how to do it myself.
oh, and that apple is VERY VERY NICE!!!!!
GOOD JOB!!!!
:)
i agree w/ Renedh i want a pizza mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, pizzza !!!

im not saying theres anything wrong with the blend tool. in fact, im a big fan of the blend tool! its just that the mesh tool has so much more potential to create 3d vectors, with less work (once you get the hang of it). with the blend tool, you defintely have to go that extra little bit when it comes to transparencies and making it all blend together. but i do recommend you learn the blend tool first. thats what i did. its a lot easier to use
